And the winning name is...By the Books!
By the books, and next to the library...

A festive atmosphere prevailed Friday morning at Lansdowne as celebrity baristas served steaming espressos to an appreciative crowd at the grand opening of the By The Books Coffee Shop. Music by Zone 91.3 FM and impromptu weather reports by Gordie Tupper of CHEK NEWS helped stir the crowd into a spirit of celebration. Opening events, made all the more jovial by the barista brigade of deans and directors, culminated with the announcement of the coffee shop’s winning name.
Winner’s bragging rights, along with the $250-value prize basket of coffee swag, belong to Maggy Charles from the School of Health and Human Services. “The name came to me in a flash,” says Charles, who took inspiration from the fact the shop is adjacent to the Alan Batey Library & Learning Commons. “I’m so excited others like the name as much as I do!”
Kathryn Le Gros of Ancillary Services congratulated all those who entered the naming contest. “We had over 250 entries from students and staff, and the suggestions were very clever,” says Le Gros. “Selecting the finalist was a huge challenge for our committee, but in the end we were unanimous with our decision.”
“The shop is exactly what our customers were asking for at Lansdowne,” says Aramark food services manager Donna Burger. “This cafeteria means we can offer more choices, including specialty coffees, iced drinks and gluten-free snacks. “ Burger says feedback from students and staff has been great. “Customers love our new partnership with Level Ground Trading, and really appreciate the mid-campus location.”
