Graduates will gain skills needed in construction, ship building and aircraft manufacturing
July 20, 2011
In response to current and future industry needs, Camosun is launching a new Sheet Metal and Metal Fabrication Foundation program. The 30-week full-time program will prepare graduates for a choice of careers and apprenticeships, accepting 18 students into the first intake, starting Monday, August 22 at Interurban campus.
Graduates will gain a wide variety of skills and knowledge, including Precision Sheet Metal skills with a specialty in aircraft sheet metal fabrication and assembly. In addition, the new program includes the ITA Level 1 technical training for an apprenticeship in three different trades:
Transferable skills for a choice of careers!
Metal Fabrication is one of the trades in high demand within the shipbuilding industry. That demand will increase dramatically if part of the federal shipbuilding contracts is awarded to BC-based companies.
“The best part about this new program is its multi-directional career focus,” says Brian Coey, metal trades instructor at Camosun College. “Our graduates will have transferable skills to go into whichever industry area is booming at the time.”
Locally there is a growing need for sheet metal workers who have the precision skills needed for the aircraft manufacturing industry. Viking , located in Sidney, BC, has a number of job openings posted, to keep up with the global market for its popular Twin Otter series of aircraft.
Sheet metal and architectural sheet metal workers are needed in residential, commercial and industrial construction, where they install and repair flashing, copper roofing, air conditioning ducts, soffits, restaurant equipment, and many other projects.
