Did you know that Camosun has a Professional Music department? It does, sort of, with its partnership with the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Together we offer diplomas in classical or jazz music that can set you on your path to fame…
Chris Peterson started first on piano at age 8, and then moved to the trombone. His mom and dad bought him his first guitar at age 14—an electric. With the first strum of those strings, he knew he wanted to focus on guitar. Right away, he began studying both acoustic and electric guitar with VCM faculty member, Rob Cheramy. That’s when the real journey began.
Rob Cheramy quickly became Chris’s musical mentor and inspiration, and his primary reason to continue to take it to the next level. After graduating high school in 2004, Chris learned about the VCM/Camosun College Diploma in Jazz Studies. It was a great fit—not only would it allow Chris to study music at the post-secondary level, but it also allowed him to live at home, bringing the pursuit of musical studies financially within his grasp. It also gave him a bit more time to develop his skills before making bigger decisions on how far to take his musical talent. While studying, he got lots of time one-on-one with some great teachers, something he knew he couldn’t get at a larger institution. Years later, those same teachers are now personal friends and mentors to Chris, which he values immensely.
Two years later, Chris was one of the first graduates of the program and was awarded his Diploma in Jazz Studies. The diploma program prepared Chris to apply and be accepted to the Berklee College of Music in Boston—the premier contemporary music school in North America (to date, Berklee alumni have won a total of 176 Grammy Awards!) – as well as the opportunity to be awarded an annual $8,000 Berklee scholarship. Chris is majoring in Guitar performance, and has recently shifted his focus to what he calls ‘progressive/fusion/rock’ guitar.
While at Berklee, Chris is exposed to more great artists, including Scott Tarulli, John Baboian and Bret Willmott. After graduating with Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee in May, 2010, Chris will start a Master of Music degree in the fall of 2010 at either the University of Toronto, or the University of Miami. On top of all this, Chris still keeps in close touch with his mentor Rob, at the VCM, and jams with him whenever he’s in Victoria.
For now, the sky’s the limit! Is a Grammy in his future? Stay tuned...
