Camosun Technology grads showcase projects custom-designed for local clients
Capstone Symposium, Friday, Dec 5, 10am-2:30pm @ Harbour Towers Hotel
What do dirt bike owners, rowing clubs, realtors and Kitchen’s Best Manufacturing all have in common? They’re all getting help from Camosun technology students, who are working in teams to custom-design a high tech solution to a business problem.
Camosun is hosting the annual Capstone Symposium on Friday, December 5, 2008 to showcase student projects and to bring tech sector employers together with technology graduates. Seven student teams will participate in the symposium, demonstrating projects developed at the request of a local business or organization. This partnership provides real-world experience for the students, who in exchange use their skills and talents to help the client.
“The diversity of projects and clients is really interesting,” said Ken Hartman, computing science instructor at Camosun College. “Besides meeting the technical challenges, our students also develop those all-important career skills like teamwork, time management and learning to understand what the client really wants and why.
“The symposium will be of interest to former graduates now working in the IT industry, potential employers looking for newly trained people, and students curious about career opportunities in technology,” explained Hartman.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Tom Roemer, Dean of Camosun’s School of Trades and Technology. Dr. Roemer will talk about the emerging role of community colleges as technology transfer hubs and centres for innovation.
There is no charge for admission and the event is open to the public. A networking lunch will be provided.
