Awards and Scholarships

Want financial help for your education?

The School of Arts & Science, in partnership with the Camosun College Foundation, offers a series of awards to our outstanding students. Camosun also offers a wide selection of bursaries for full-time students.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must be enrolled in a program within the School of Arts & Science during the current offering or academic calendar year.

Awards Ceremony

The School of Arts & Science hosts an annual Awards Ceremony each fall, where most of the awards and scholarships are presented.

The Arts & Science Administration Office will notify the recipients of their award/scholarship (usually in August) and then invitations to the Awards Ceremony will be sent out by email.

If your mailing address has changed since applying, please update your address.

Allen & Loreen Vandekerkhove Family Foundation Science Award

This award is given to a high achieving full-time student proceeding from first to second year and who carries a minimum of 3 courses in science per term. Please submit a statement describing your background, interests, academic program, and career goals (200 words, typed, double-spaced).

Fred Hughes Endowed Science Award

This award acknowledges high academic achievement (GPA) and is given annually to a science student going into their second year of either the Associate of Science Degree or UT program, who is a full-time student and carries a minimum of 3 courses in science and/or mathematics per term. Please submit a statement describing your background, interests, academic program, and career goals (200 words, typed, double-spaced).

Latham Pazdro Women in the World Award

The award is open to Camosun individuals or groups who, in their course assignments, have done a substantial piece of work on the subject of women. Please submit a piece of work such as art, a body of creative writing or a unique research essay in which women are the focus. The submission must be a Camosun College School of Arts & Science course assignment completed in the current academic year, submitted with the instructor's original class assignment.

This award is named for Roberta Pazdro and Barbara Latham, co-editors of Not Just Pin Money: Selected Essays on the History of Women's Work in British Columbia(1984), the publication which initially funded this Award.

Roberta Pazdro is a long time production manager in the Canadian film and television industry in Toronto; Barbara Latham is a retired Camosun instructor who, amongst other things, taught the first Women's Studies Course in Sociology.

Nicole Borthwick Spirit Award

This award is given to one student who exemplifies community spirit through their volunteer efforts. Please submit an essay of no more than 300 words detailing how you meet the criteria.

Associate of Science Degree

Associate of Science Degree Award - Year 2

The Associate of Science Degree Award - Second-Year acknowledges high academic achievement and is given annually to a student in year two of the Associate of Science Degree Program. You should have successfully completed at least 16 University Transfer courses in the Associate of Science Degree Program, with a minimum of 6 second-year courses and have a high GPA. Preference will be given to those whose GPA is 7.0 (A-) or higher. Please submit a statement describing your background, interests, academic program, and career goals (200 words, typed, double-spaced).

Dave and Bev Knapton Associate of Science Degree Scholarship

The Dave and Bev Knapton Associate of Science Degree Scholarship acknowledges high academic achievement and is given annually to a domestic student (Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant) in the first year of the Associate of Science Degree Program. You must have taken a minimum of eight first-year courses (four courses per semester) and be registered for at least four courses in the upcoming fall semester. Preference will be given to those whose GPA is 7.0 (A-) or higher.

Mathematics and Statistics

Jill Britton Elementary Education Mathematics Award

The Elementary Education Mathematics Award is awarded to a student who has successfully completed all requirements for admission to the 2nd year of the Elementary Education program at the University of Victoria with a minimum GPA of 7.0 (A-), and who has achieved a superior standing in both MATH 142 and MATH 143. Please submit a brief statement (200 words) describing your career goals and experience (work-related or volunteer) with elementary school children.

Jim Mugford Mathematics Award

The Jim Mugford Mathematics Award is awarded to a student who has successfully completed first-year calculus, linear algebra, and at least three second-year mathematics or statistics courses, has achieved a minimum GPA of 7.0 (A-) in second-year mathematics or statistics courses and has not been a previous recipient of this award. Please submit a brief statement (200 words) describing your background, academic program, career goals and interests.

This award was established by the Mathematics & Statistics Department to honour a former colleague, Jim Mugford, who was instrumental in developing and maintaining the second-year Mathematics & Statistics program at Camosun.

Leo Neufeld Linear Algebra Award

The Leo Neufeld Linear Algebra Award is awarded to a student who has achieved a high academic standing in at least three mathematics or statistics courses at Camosun, one of which will be MATH 125. Preference will be given to a first year mathematics student. Please submit a short statement (200 words) describing your background, interests and academic and career goals.

This award honours Leo Neufeld, the former head of the Mathematics & Statistics Department at Camosun College for more than 25 years.

Statistics Award

The Statistics Award is awarded to a student who has successfully completed a minimum of three second year university transferable courses at Camosun with a minimum grade of an A in either STAT 216 or STAT 218 and also in STAT 219. You must not have been a previous recipient of the award, and preference will be given to those who may pursue further studies in statistics. Please submit a brief statement (200 words) describing your background, academic program, career goals and interests.

Ted Adkin Memorial Award

The Ted Adkin Memorial Award is awarded to a student who is a College Preparatory or first-year Arts & Science student who has been away from formal academic studies for at least three years prior to attending Camosun College, and has successfully completed at least six credit courses, at least two of which are part of the College Preparatory program. You should have completed at least one of the following courses: MATH 137, MATH 107 or MATH 115, have a minimum GPA of 7.0 (A-) and not been a previous recipient of this award. Please submit a brief statement describing your background, academic program, career goals and interests (200 words).

Engineering Transfer

Ralph and Mary Ward Engineering Transfer Endowed Award

This award recognizes a student who is a Canadian citizen enrolled full-time in the Certificate in Engineering Transfer Program.  The student must have completed the first two terms of the program with a minimum grade of B+ and exhibit an exceptional potential in the field of Engineering.
