Indigenous Learning

Heart, mind and spirit

Broadening your knowledge

Enhance your understanding of Indigenous peoples, issues, world views and knowledges. Expand your skills for living and working in culturally diverse communities and organizations.

Cultivating awareness

Indigenous courses, many taught by Indigenous faculty, centre on Indigenous perspectives and issues. A number of courses provide opportunities for in-community and on-the-land learning and include teachings from Elders and other knowledge keepers.

Open Indigenous courses and some Indigenous programs welcome both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.

Indigenous Learning supports people who want to develop careers in community engagement, community development, social work, nursing, education, leadership and public service.

You can take Indigenous Learning courses in a number of ways.

Programs

If you want to focus on Indigenous Learning and earn a full credential, you can take programs with Indigenous perspectives or take Indigenous courses as part of one of Camosun's related programs.

Electives and individual courses

A number of Indigenous courses are open to all Camosun students and transfer as university credits. IST 120 – Understanding Indigenous Peoples is a course that aims to guide you to a better understanding of the culture, history and experience of Indigenous people in Canada. It’s a great elective or professional development opportunity.

Courses with Indigenous content

There are also a number of courses with Indigenous content. These courses can be used as Camosun electives or program content and may transfer to other universities.
