Shannon Parker, a third-year Bachelor of Business Administration, Human Resource Management & Leadership Major student, completed her first co-op work experience this past summer. Hired by Camosun College to research, analyze and make recommendations related to equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Camosun's 2015 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Report
Over the span of a six-week period, 59 employees and students were interviewed from a variety of departments, schools, and employee groups. This group of interviewees provided their diverse perspective of the College's current standing in regards to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
As a result of these interviews, four suggested areas of focus were discovered including: communication, safety and comfort, attracting diverse populations and integration of international students. The report covers the current challenges for each focus area as identified through the interviews and offers suggestions on how these challenges might be addressed.
The conversations also revealed areas in regards to equity, diversity, and inclusion where employees and students felt the college was successful. These areas include, but are not limited to: hiring practices, membership in the Community Partnerships Network and workshops/courses related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
As a result of this project, it has been recognized and recommended by the Diversity Advisory Committee that the college could benefit from hiring a part-time FTE (full-time equivalent) employee to support the ongoing work of diversity at Camosun. This report outlines the duties and responsibilities that would be carried out of a Diversity Coordinator if the college chooses to employ one.
Shannon is completing her second and third co-op work experience in the position of Human Resource Assistant with Camosun College for the next 8 months.
This amazing opportunity reinforced my career path in Human Resources and taught me invaluable skills that I will use throughout the rest of my career.
