Awards and Scholarships

The School of Arts & Science, in partnership with the Camosun College Foundation, offers a series of awards to our outstanding students. Camosun also offers a wide selection of bursaries for full-time students.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must be enrolled in a program within the School of Arts & Science during the current offering or academic calendar year.

Awards Ceremony

The School of Arts & Science hosts an annual Awards Ceremony each fall, where most of the awards and scholarships are presented.

The Arts & Science Administration Office will notify the recipients of their award/scholarship (usually in August) and then invitations to the Awards Ceremony will be sent out by email.

This award is given to a high achieving full-time student proceeding from first to second year and who carries a minimum of 3 courses in science per term. Please submit a statement describing your background, interests, academic program, and career goals (200 words, typed, double-spaced).

Latham Pazdro Women in the World Award

The award is open to Camosun individuals or groups who, in their course assignments, have done a substantial piece of work on the subject of women. Please submit a piece of work such as art, a body of creative writing or a unique research essay in which women are the focus. The submission must be a Camosun College School of Arts & Science course assignment completed in the current academic year, submitted with the instructor's original class assignment.

This award is named for Roberta Pazdro and Barbara Latham, co-editors of Not Just Pin Money: Selected Essays on the History of Women's Work in British Columbia(1984), the publication which initially funded this Award.

Roberta Pazdro is a long time production manager in the Canadian film and television industry in Toronto; Barbara Latham is a retired Camosun instructor who, amongst other things, taught the first Women's Studies Course in Sociology.

Nicole Borthwick Spirit Award

This award is given to one student who exemplifies community spirit through their volunteer efforts. Please submit an essay of no more than 300 words detailing how you meet the criteria.

Associate of Arts Degree Award - Year 2

The Associate of Arts Degree Award - Second-Year acknowledges high academic achievement and is given annually to a student in year Two of the Associate of Arts Degree Program. You should have successfully completed at least 16 University Transfer courses in the Associate of Arts Degree Program, with a minimum of 6 second-year courses, as well as a high GPA. Preference will be given to those whose GPA is 7.0 (A-) or higher. Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria - Heather Lewis Associate Degree in Science Entrance Scholarships

The Associate Degree Entrance Scholarships acknowledge high academic achievement and are given to high school students enrolled to begin Associate Degree program studies in the Fall semester with the School of Arts & Science, Camosun College. This award recognizes a mature student enrolled in the Associate Degree program who has been away from formal academic studies for at least three years prior to attending Camosun College. You must be returning to complete your second year at Camosun and have completed at least two Psychology or two Math courses with a minimum grade point average of 7 or above (A-). Please submit a statement describing your background, interests, academic program, and career goals (200 words, typed, double-spaced). Two awards granted per year.

Dave and Bev Knapton Associate of Arts Degree Scholarship

The Dave and Bev Knapton Associate of Arts Degree Scholarship acknowledges high academic achievement and is given annually to a domestic student (Canadian citizen or landed immigrant) in the first year of the Associate of Arts Degree Program. You must have taken a minimum of eight first-year courses (four courses per semester) and be registered for at least four courses in the upcoming fall semester. Preference will be given to those whose GPA is 7.0 (A-) or higher.

Provides an award to one or more students completing Digital Production, Writing and Design with a special interest in web design. The Barrie Black Memorial Award is awarded to a student who has graduated from the Camosun College Digital Production, Writing and Design Program during the past year and has attained high academic achievement, demonstrates the ability to work well with others and demonstrates strong web production and design skills.

This award was established by the Pacific Instructional Media Association (later amalgamated with the Association for Media & Technology in Education Canada) to honour Barrie Black.

Barrie Black was the founder and director of PEMC (Provincial Educational Media Centre) in the 1970s and early 1980s. After working for many years with CBC producers on Canadian School Broadcasts, Barrie helped establish the Ministry of Education's first studio to produce television to meet the specific needs of BC educators. He was a pioneer in the application of multimedia systems for teaching and learning in the Province.

Excellence in Communication Theory Award

The Excellence in Communication Theory Award is presented to a student who has graduated from a program in the Department of Communications at Camosun College during the past year and has attained high academic achievement in one or more communication theory courses.

Kerm Carlson Award of Excellence

Awarded to one or more students who has graduated from either Digital Communication or Digital Production, Writing and Design or Live Event and Audio Visual Technician with high academic standing. Award recipients will also have demonstrated personal initiative, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to learn and apply new skills throughout their program. The program chair or designate will select the recipient based on GPA and recommendations from instructors in the programs.

Shelagh Stanley Award

Provides an award to the best writer or writers who have completed the Digital Production, Writing and Design program. Born in Winnipeg in 1945, Shelagh Stanley's journalism career began as a reporter for the Kingston Whig-Standard in Ontario. She became news editor and city editor there before moving to Toronto to become the features editor for Canadian Living and later, the managing editor of Select Homes magazine.

After moving to Victoria, Shelagh worked briefly for the Times- Colonist and then went on to a successful career as a communications officer for various B.C. government ministries. Shelagh shared her love of journalism with Camosun students, teaching writing classes in the Applied Communication Program from 1994 to 2003. She reluctantly gave this up when she became too ill to teach. Shelagh passed away November 20, 2004.

Her mother, Margaret McDougall, was instrumental in creating this award to honour Shelagh's memory and encourage aspiring writers within the Digital Production, Writing and Design Program.

TECTORIA Video Game Industry Award for Artists

This award recognizes a recent high school graduate entering the Certificate in Comics & Graphic Novels program at Camosun College. The student will have demonstrated their passion for video games by participating in a game jam, contributing art to a game, creating a video game or engaging in other forms of visual storytelling. Please submit an essay of no more than 300 words detailing how you meet the criteria; include links that support the details of your essay where possible, and the high school/year of graduation.

The selection committee looks for originality and skill shown in the submissions of a short story, play, long poem, or several short poems.
