Community Volunteer Income Tax Program at Camosun
For two weeks until early April, accounting students in the School of Business provided free tax preparation clinics for fellow students with moderate incomes, successfully completing over 100 tax returns accurately and confidentially.
Each student successfully completed training provided by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as well as School of Business faculty. In addition, each student was screened by CRA to ensure high standards for confidentiality and integrity.
Supervised by faculty who are professional accountants, the students gained valuable practical experience while providing an important service for their fellow students.
Given the success of this inaugural program at Camosun, plans are underway for it to be an annual event. As well, Camosun accounting students will be broadening their community support by offering free tax preparation services for low income senior citizens later this month.
Special thanks to the faculty volunteers for their hours of supervision as well as Monique Tatum for her endless efforts in coordinating this program.
