United Way pancake breakfast @ Interurban - November 3

The pancake breakfasts will take place between the hours of 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. Participation is by donation, with all monies raised going to the United Way Campaign. Thanks to the kind support from Aramark who provide all the supplies and do the cooking.

Camosun's Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering will showcase some very interesting interactive gizmos and gadgets. This event targets the curiosity of young science-minded children guaranteed to be entertaining and educational for the whole family.
Culinary Arts Fundraiser a success!

Camosun Culinary Arts department participated in a Fundraising event, organized by the Good Food Society on Sunday, March 6th, from 11am-2pm at the Root Cellar Market, 1286 McKenzie Avenue (at Blenkinsop). Our cook students and instructors sold nearly 300 bowls of freshly made hot soup with all proceeds going to the Good Food Society. “Food Security & Social Justice” is the mandate of this non-profit organization which acts as an alternative distribution system for fresh produce to local communities who are most food-insecure including low income, at risk and Aboriginal families. Lots of delicious, heartwarming soup was sold supporting approximately $1,500 toward this worthy cause.

In Arusha, Tanzania, Camosun is working with Arusha Technical College to develop a one-year Lapidary and Jewellery Design program as well as a three-year Heavy Duty Equipment Technician program. In Mozambique, Camosun will support the development a one-year entry-level Residential Construction Technician program as well as a more advanced technical diploma.

Six students from LÁU,WELNEW Tribal School in Grades 7 to 10 presented their minute-long stories and video games at Camosun’s Interurban campus. ANCEStor is an educational package -- complete with software, training materials and lesson plans , which aims to engage aboriginal youth in computer programming through traditional storytelling.

On Thursday, February 3rd mark your calendars to attend the T&T Career Fair in the Interurban Technologies Building from 9:30am until 1:30pm. There will be 16 exhibitors, 4 key-note speakers and pizza! Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend and chat about cooperative education, internship, graduate and volunteer opportunites. Meeting rooms will be available for on the spot interviews.
Irving K. Barber Scholarship awarded to Bridge Student

Carl Philippsen, Engineering Bridge student, was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Irving K. Barber Scholarship that will help fund his studies. Carl is very thankful that he was informed about this opportunity and pull together an application just in time "with one day to spare". Well deserved!

On Sunday, November 14, 2010 Camosun hosted the annual Chef of the Year competition put on by the Canadian Culinary Federation, Victoria Branch. Congratulations to the top 3 winners - all Camosun grads! Graham Smith, John Lance, Kyle Campbell, Andrew Dickinson and Andrew Campbell are all graduates of Camosun’s highly respected Professional Cook Training program.

Computer Systems Technology grad Katherine Williams won the award for her co-op at Eightfold Logic in Victoria. Besides the honour of being dubbed the best co-op student in BC at a college level, she also received $1,000.
Electronics students awarded in International Competition

In a competition that attracted professional engineers and software designers from 60 different countries, a two-person student team from Camosun was awarded Honourable Mention. To earn their place in the Top 20 category, Justin Curran and Catherine Woodward developed customized software that will run the motor controls for an electric motorcycle.
National Science and Technology Week

The National Science and Technology Event is hosted collaboratively by Camosun College and School Districts 61 Victoria, 62 Sooke, 63 Saanich, 64 Gulf Islands, and 79 Cowichan Valley. The event will be offered over 5 days, each morning from 9:00am to 12:00 noon and will serve 350 secondary school students, 70 from each school district.

Elliot Lewis-Lifton and Maggie Angus, Silver medal winners in Landscape Gardening and Darcy Roads, Silver Medal winner in Carpentry at the 16th annual Skills Canada BC provincial competition, held in Abbotsford on April 21, 2010! Darcy Roads and his instructor, Al van Akker, will be participating in the Skills Canada National competition which will be held in Waterloo, Ontario from May 20-23, 2010.
Congratulations to First Nations graduates of the Level 3 apprenticeship training in the Residential Building Maintenance Worker Program (RBMW)! More details.
Culinary Success story cooked with ingredients from Camosun
Melissa Craig, a graduate of Camosun’s Culinary Arts program, currently stars on national TV as part of a commercial for the White Spot restaurant chain. Melissa is the Executive Chef at Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler. In 2001, while at Camosun, she competed in a national competition for apprentices and won top spot. After her graduation, Melissa accepted the sous chef position at the five-star restaurant in Whistler. Now she is the Executive Chef. In 2008, the 28-year-old won the National Gold Plate Award in the 2008 Canadian Culinary Championship, beating some of the country’s best chefs for the honour.
Niall McPherson, a second year Civil Engineering Technology student, was among the finalists for the BC Parks Student Design Competition.. The winner, Jonathon Lambert, while currently a student at UBC, was also a graduate of Camosun's Civil Engineering Technology Program and the Civil Engineering Bridge Program.
On April 22, Chris Owen, a 3rd Year student in the Electrical Apprenticeship program, won the Silver Medal in the Post Secondary Electrical Wiring competition at the 15th Annual Skills Canada Provincial competition. This extends the winning streak of Camosun’s Trades students in provincial, national and international competitions.
Some of our Plumbing & Pipefitting students were entered as competitors in the Western Regional Competition (Local Union 324) and returned successful. Gabriel Cole (Sprinklerfitting) won Bronze; Darren Burt (Steam/Pipefitting) Silver, and Alasdair Reid (Plumbing) Gold. Alasdair’s result qualified him for the 3-day National Competition where he was able to capture the Gold Medal in Plumbing. He now qualifies for the International Competition. Thanks to Al Paterson and Jamie McPherson for training & coaching!
