Cultural Pre-conference

Important update for pre-conference attendees

In preparation for the pre-conference, we are asking that delegates sign-up for one of the below three options prior to arriving at the Songhees Wellness Centre on the morning of August 23rd (instructions and link below). This will ease the process of breaking out for activities on that morning.

In working with our community knowledge-keepers and Elders at Songhees and Tsawout First Nations on the day's logistics for the large number of participants, we are offering three distinct experiences for delegates to choose between:

  • Option 1: Culture and Community (54 spots)
  • Option 2: On the Water and the Land (36 spots)
  • Option 3: Sweatlodge Ceremony (20 spots)

We are all meeting in the Wellness Centre Gym at 9am for sign-in and an opening before breaking out into our activity groups. Bagged lunches will be provided at each location for delegates. All shuttles for away-activities will return to the Songhees Wellness Centre by 3pm to give everyone time to return to their accommodations for a rest before dinner. Doors will re-open for the Welcome Dinner at 5pm. Please remember that the Welcome Dinner is included in your Pre-conference fee. See the schedule below.

If you have any questions please email us.

Activity Descriptions

Option Location Capacity Description
Option 1: Culture and Community Songhees Wellness Centre 54

Join Songhees community knowledge keepers and Elders for sessions centred on Lekwungen language, territory and history at the Songhees Wellness Centre. Participants will have the choice of two of three sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon with a lunch-break to get to know your fellow delegates.

Recommended for those with limitations in mobility and physical stamina.
Option 2: On the Water and the Land Gorge Waterway 36

Join Songhees community and Gorge Nature House facilitators for a day of canoeing and storytelling on the water and the land at the Gorge Waterway. Participants will learn about the interwoven history and ecology of Lekwungen territory.

What to Bring: Dress for the outdoors, bring sunscreen, a hat, water-bottle, bathing-suit if you want a dip and shoes you don’t mind getting wet if you want to canoe.

Transportation will be provided and you will be returned to the Songhess Wellness Centre by 3pm.

Option 3: Sweatlodge Ceremony Tsawout First Nation 20

The Sweatlodge Ceremony will take place at Aiyakum Lodge, starting at 10:30am on the Tsawout First Nation. Elder Victor Underwood and Annishnaabe teacher Richard Spearman will be the keepers of the lodge. The sweatlodge ceremony typically lasts for 2-3 hours. There are four rounds and people can come out of the lodge after each round. The lodge on this day will be open to both men and twomen. There are protocols around the lodge that must be adhered to and more information on this will be sent to those who sign up for this session. If you would like to know more before signing up please contact us.

What to Bring: Participants are expected to bring shorts and a T-Shirt or Tank-Top, a change of clothes, a towel and water bottle/extra bottled water.

Transportation will be provided and you will be returned to the Songhees Wellness Centre by 3pm.

Not recommended for anyone with pre-existing health conditions.
