Long commute for 48 Camosun College Nursing students

Posted Fri, 07 May 2010

Forty-six first and second-year nursing students are getting the education of their dreams in four exotic, rural locales: Dehradun, India; Nuku’alofa, Tonga; Kathmandu, Nepal; and Whitehorse, Canada.

Transcending the traditional class-based experience, Camosun field schools are short-term credit programs taught by Camosun College faculty members in remote communities, usually in a foreign country. Travelling and studying as a group, students develop intercultural competence and sensitivity—skills considered a requirement among those working in the health care sector.

The first Nursing field school, a joint effort of Camosun International and the School of Health and Human Services, was offered in Tonga in 2004. Its success inspired further Nursing field schools in a variety of countries including Cebu City, Philippines in 2005; Dehradun, India in 2006; Windhoek, Namibia in 2007; and Whitehorse, North West Territories in 2008.
