Ada Barker received her Associate of Arts Degree in Sacramento, California in 1978 and three years later received her Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene in 1981 from the Oregon Institute of Technology, where she also received her Baccalaureate Degree in Applied Health Technology in 1982. In 1998, Ada graduated with a Masters of Arts Degree from Gonzaga State University in Spokane, Washington, USA.
Ada has practiced dental hygiene in general and periodontal specialty practices for over 20 years. She began her career in education 25 years ago at Camosun College where she taught clinical theory and practice, oral sciences, and professional practice courses. She is a continuing faculty member and the current program leader for Camosun College’s dental hygiene program. She is an active member of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association, British Columbia Dental Hygienists Association, and Canadian Educators Group. She has worked closely with the Miyagi Advanced Dental Hygienist College from Sendai, Japan on a faculty and student exchange program since 2009. In 2007, she established the first dental hygiene field school from any Canadian institution and in 2016, is celebrating their 9th year of community service in Nayarit, Mexico. Her hope is that by the time the students leave Camosun, that they not only learn how to be competent health care practitioners but also become more compassionate people for the communities that they will serve.
