Camosun Business Student Wins Big Bank Money Toward Education
Camosun College business student wins $10,000 for singing and telling it ‘like it is’.
Kylee O’Dell starts third year at Camosun College September 8 with money in the bank. O’Dell, a Bachelor of Business Administration student, was one of three winners of the RBC Student Do-Over Video Challenge this summer.
Ten finalist video submissions were featured on the RBC Better Student Life web site this summer, and at the end of July, three students were each awarded $10,000 after being voted the best by their peers. More than 22,000 students voted online for their favourites.
O’Dell is sharing her $10,000 cheque with singing co-star and sister, Megan O’Dell. Megan started at Camosun College in the university transfer program, and is now at the University of Victoria.
Funding future educational plans
“We want to finish our degrees in Victoria and then attend graduate studies abroad, either in London or Edinburgh,” says O’Dell. “Megan would like to teach in the UK, and I want to practice law there. The $10,000 is sitting in our savings accounts collecting interest to fund our lofty ambitions which will hopefully come to fruition in the next three years when we are both finished our undergraduate degrees.”
O’Dell starts Camosun’s Bachelor of Business Administration-Marketing Communications Management Major program September 8, after earning a Business Administration two-year diploma this past spring.
Marketing and business law courses are part of the business administration program.
Theory made winningly real
O’Dell applied what she learned in marketing to the RBC Do-Over contest. “Since the target group, my peers, love comedy and music, it was a natural fit to do a somewhat cheesy, yet meaningful musical number to get our message across,” says O’Dell. “When you apply what you learn, you'd be surprised how well things work out!”
Lyrically and practically, the cost of university education earns a failing grade compared to college tuition! The O’Dell sisters don’t hold back while singing it ‘like it is’ from the students’ perspectives. See their award-winning lyrics below and on the RBC Better Student Life website.

O’Dell adds, “I want to thank friends and family from across Canada, my local RBC branch, the Pacific Christian school community and the gardening department at the Butchart Gardens for all their support and votes!"
O’Dell has earned a place on the School of Business’ Dean’s Honour Roll for the last two years, with a grade point average of 8.80. The Dean’s Honor Roll recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of students enrolled in full-time Camosun College programs.
Pat Hannah is Victoria’s Broadmead RBC manager. “Thousands of post-secondary students across Canada were given an opportunity to explain what they would do differently if they could go back to their first year of university or college in the RBC Student Do-Over Video Challenge,” says Hannah. “We’re so pleased that a Victoria student placed in the top three, and that Kylee won!”
