Cinema Politica
New Fall lineup
Cinema Politica Victoria returns to Camosun College this fall, with a new line-up of thought-provoking films: Sweet Crude, Orgasm Inc. and Waterlife.
Once a month, Camosun welcomes the public to Lansdowne campus for a premiere showing of films about topical social issues. A key aspect of the film series is the facilitated discussion that follows each film, where members of the audience are encouraged to share their reactions and ideas.
“We look for films that are beautiful, that are inspirational and that will spark discussion,” says Jeanne Iribarne, English instructor at Camosun College. “The idea is to screen films that will begin conversations in our community. The majority are films that haven’t been screened before in Victoria.”
Camosun’s School of Arts and Science introduced Cinema Politica last year, hosting ten film nights between September and April. As more people learned of the series, Camosun saw the audience more than double over the season, with many return viewers.
“Cinema Politica is the opposite of passive entertainment,” says Iribarne. “Many people want to better understand today’s big issues and would like to talk with other like-minded, curious viewers. The post-film discussion is definitely a highlight.”
