Tony Vernon Co-Chair, English Language Development
BA, BEd, MA, EdD candidate
In 2007, I started teaching at Camosun after three years of teaching at UVic. My career in English as Second Language instruction began back in 1996 in Montreal and then moved on to 5 years at Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea.
I have always been interested in languages, especially English. I am currently working on my third degree, a doctorate, in teaching ESL in order to inform myself more about this field. I am always keen to find out more about teaching and to develop my craft. I have just started work on my dissertation on formulaic language and speaking, and I am hoping to share my results with the College.
I really enjoy teaching ESL because every day presents new learning experiences. I meet learners from various cultures and backgrounds, and we share our differences, and more importantly, our commonalities.
I have recently taken on the position of co-chair in the ELD department. I am looking forward to the experiences that I will gain and challenges that I will face in this new role. I am also open to learning more about the college and our community and how we can do more to serve each other.
My work and my studies keep me out of trouble, but when I find the time, I enjoy reading, cooking, cycling, travelling, going to the gym, and playing with pets. Oh, and eating.
If you have any questions about the ELD department, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will do my best to inform you. I look forward to meeting you.
