Innovative skilled trades program offers new options for women and employers

Knowing that women are under-represented in skilled trades careers, BC’s Industry Training Authority partnered with Camosun College to deliver a hands-on exploration and preparation program called the Women in Trades Training Initiative. During the five-month pilot program, students sampled a variety of trades, learned valuable academic and applied skills, and gained insights into the rewards and challenges of a career in one of the skilled trades. The program included hands-on activities—surveying, plumbing, forklift driving, horticulture—coupled with related math and English academic upgrading.

You may recognize these typical statements from anyone experiencing the confounding condition: "OOPS, I took the wrong math...OOPS, I've been out of school for awhile and my English skills are rusty...OOPS, I was too interested in sports to take chemistry." Teachers, counsellors, parents and adult learners are invited to stop by for coffee and conversation during Open House Thursday, May 5, 8:30am to 3pm, CBA 159. Find out about upgrading courses, ESL and other ways Camosun helps people get ready for college.

Sample the Campus program brings high school students on campus

Please welcome 12 high school students to the Interurban Campus on Fridays until mid-March. They will be “sampling” our Employment Training and Preparation programs and experiencing a college environment for the first time. This program is part of LYNC: Leading Youth to New Careers.
Spring has sprung

Seeding has begun in the greenhouse run by students and staff in the Employment Training and Preparation program. Already the tomatoes have emerged into the light. Spring is definitely in the air!
March 8—International Women's Day luncheon and keynote speaker, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond

Bridges for Women Society will host a luncheon with keynote speaker, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, BC's Representative for Children and Youth. Tickets are $50. All proceeds go to support Bridges, a non-profit agency with over 20 years of experience in empowering women with a background of abuse and trauma. Registration begins at 11am, lunch at noon. Location: St. John's Hall, 925 Balmoral Road. Bridges is a Community Learning Partner with Camosun College.
Camosun ESL students recognized for their writing skills

Students in Camosun's ESL classes come from all over the world, range widely in their career and educational backgrounds, and have a variety of educational goals. One thing that students Ikuko Meguriya and Joy Xing have in common is their excellent writing skills. Both placed well in an Association of BC Teachers of English as an Additional Language—BC TEAL contest.

Check out our Annual Report, where you’ll read about the important work we do, preparing learners to achieve educational and career goals. The strength of our report lies in the stories about our community of learners and educators—stories of transformation and accomplishment. Our students come to us expecting to gain practical skills: academic upgrading; ESL instruction; career exploration, improved literacy and numeracy and more. What they experience, in many cases, takes them much further than they ever dared dream.
New web page to help you understand secondary school prerequisite alternatives

Did you know that for courses or programs with a secondary school prerequisite, there may be an alternative Camosun course or combination of courses? For example, students who are missing Bio 11 can take BIOL 102 at Camosun. To help you figure this out we have created a one stop shop webpage that outlines which Camosun courses students can take to satisfy secondary course requirements.
New Associate Dean of the School of Access

The college welcomes Sarah Loewen as the new Associate Dean of the School of Access. The selection committee was impressed by Sarah’s ability to facilitate the development of programs and courses that transcend traditional boundaries and barriers to formal education. “I believe partnership and collaboration are the keys to creating programs that effectively build community capacity,” says Loewen.
2010 Learner Achievement Award recipient—Billy Youlden

Billy Youlden, Camosun student and Literacy Victoria learner, was awarded the 2010 Learner Achievement Award at the annual Literacy Celebration dinner on June 16, 2010. Literacy Victoria, one of Camosun's Community Learning Partnerships, honoured the big strides Billy has made in her commitment to her own development.
Spring Graduation Ceremony—June 18, 2010

On a beautiful spring day, Camosun hosted a graduation ceremony at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence on the Interurban campus. Approximately 1700 grads, guests, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate this important student milestone. For many of our Access students, this is a stepping stone to further educational programs at Camosun and beyond. For others, it is the final step before embarking on careers in our communities.
