Instructor Profiles

Web Foundations Certificate Program

Joel FriesenJoel Friesen is the main instructor for the program. He is a talented and experienced web designer, working since 2000 exclusively in print and web design. He has studied design academically, developing his skills under his mentor, Canadian comic book illustrator Ken Steacy. Joel assisted Ken on projects for creative development companies such as Lucas Film and Marvel Comics.

Working for local web design companies and institutions like UVic, Joel is found comfortably creating solutions for online problems ranging from templates for every department at UVic to fostering a community of 2000 followers on twitter.

“I have a great passion for teaching and an ability to make complicated ideas easy to understand. I love teaching best when I can see the student understand complex concepts. I love to see my students use their lessons in the work they develop.”

Tanya Bub
Tanya Bub has over 10 years experience as a professional web developer. She has designed and built internet-based projects and applications including interactive Flash and Java games, CMS driven web sites and custom database applications. Tanya started as a designer, segued into programming and finally really found her niche with application design and project management. The classroom results? A broad perspective, plus a sense of exploration. Tanya currently heads a local consulting company that specializes in custom programming and design. Tanya teaches a variety of courses for graduates of the Web Foundations program.

Charles Sherman
Charles began teaching at Camosun in 2001 and developed much of the program curriculum. He now teaches a variety of courses for graduates of the Web Foundations program including Flash and PHP/MMYSQL. "Teaching challenges me to keep ahead of the curve in my field of work and I meet some pretty nice people." He likes to challenge the student, and give them a chance to challenge him. Charles likes to keep things informal but focused in class. Charles has been self-employed since 2000 with his own web design and application development company. He is a graduate of Camosun's Business Administration Program.

Clarke Wright is an experienced communications and marketing executive, graphic designer, and web developer specializing in assisting businesses with developing creative ideas to enhance their marketing objectives and strategies with an emphasis on new media and social media marketing.
