The van den Brink Spring Residency Award 2010 is presented to Sarah Stein

The van den Brink Spring Residency is awarded to a second year Visual Arts student (or past graduate of 3 years or less) who is strongly self-motivated, shows creativity and who fosters community spirit.

Sarah SteinSarah Stein has studied at the University of Victoria, Camosun College, and Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and has been awarded scholarships by the BC Arts Council. Her interdisciplinary work explores the human condition through conceptual connections between natural and man-made systems and a phenomenological approach to the world.

Sarah is excited to be at the Camosun campus as a summer resident through June-August, 2010, and will have studio hours Tuesdays 10-4. Please contact her at sarah@sarahstein.com for an appointment or to visit her in the Sculpture Annex (beside the Ceramics Studio).

Sarah's title of the piece is Closer: Proximities and Perimeters. Her completion date is scheduled for the end of the summer/beginning of September.

This project began as an exploration of introversion. I envisioned drawers of all shapes and sizes holding two-dimensional works inside. In the process of making it, it started to conceptually and materially evolve, and rather than being like a quiet thought folded away, it's begun to hold a myriad of emotions, metaphors, and aspects of what we conceal from others that lie just beneath the surface of ourselves, desperately wanting to be seen. Sarah Stein
