1. Are there any pre-requisites for the courses?
Transport Canada stipulates most of the pre-requisites for writing examinations and completing a Certificate. For more details, contact the local Transport Canada with the name of the Certificate sought.
To attend a course at Camosun College's Nautical Department, there are officially no educational pre-requisites. Regardless, it is recommended that students registering for a program have basic math skills, including the fundamental knowledge of:
- Plane trigonometry,
- Geometry,
- Algebra,
- And use of a scientific calculator.

2. What books and supplies will I need and where can I get them?
A list of books and supplies required will vary with the course that you are attending. A list will be given to you during the first day of class along with recommended suppliers. Many of the supplies may be purchased at the Camosun College bookstore. Some reference texts may need to be purchased through an outside resource. The library at the Interurban Campus has a nautical section with a limited number of texts, available on a short-term loan basis.
For a generic list of recommended books, refer to Reference Text. Remember, the actual texts used in the course may vary.
3. Can all courses required for each program be completed at Camosun College?
Varying with the program or Certificate sought, you may have to attend courses at the Pacific Marine Training Campus of BCIT. Refer to the program schedules for applicable courses.
Seats for Camosun College registered students for courses at BCIT Marine Campus, for example SEN 1B, MED B1, B2, C & D (as per schedule) will be assigned by the Program Leader, Camosun College Nautical Department.
4. Can eligibility to write Transport Canada examinations be ascertained by Camosun College staff?
No. You must contact a Transport Canada, Marine Safety Branch office to have your sea time, etc. accessed and eligibility to complete a Certificate determined. An examiner of Masters and Mates is the only authority entitled to determine your specific eligibility.
5. Are courses eligible for HRDC funding?
Some nautical courses may be funded. Contact your HRDC office, with course details, for more information. Once your eligibility as been determined, there is a local office on campus to assist you with your needs.
6. Does the department have a training vessel?
No. Field trips to various centres, dry docks, terminals and ships are typically planned by the instructor during the course to expose students to the practical world of shipping.
7. Are accommodations available on campus for out of city students?
No. It is the responsibility of each student to arrange their own accommodation.
8. Is there student access to computers on campus?
Yes. Registered students have access to computer labs, including a lab designated for the use of nautical students only. You may also set up an e-mail account through the college, cost included in the registration fee.
