Do you dream of being a lauded maestro, or of taking the stage at the Chan Centre? Of starring in La Traviata or performing at the Montreal Jazz Festival? Do you dream of passing your passion for music on to others?
In partnership with the Victoria Conservatory of Music, the two-year Diploma in Music will allow you to pursue further studies in music in the fields of performance, composition or music education. The emphasis of this program is on performance. Supported by some of the finest music teachers and performers in Victoria, you will receive intensive one-on-one studio instruction in your chosen instrument learning new repertoire and techniques, enhancing your practice skills and technical fluency, and developing excellence in performance.
You can undertake classical performance studies in any of the following instruments: piano, pipe organ, harpsichord, voice, guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, double bass, or harp. For a well-rounded education, you will also study music theory and harmony, music history, musicianship (aural skills), and participate in ensembles.
You can look towards careers in professional music performance or professional music instruction. Career options exist in conducting, composition, teaching, music management, and music media and technologies.
Upon completion of the Diploma in Music, you're well prepared to continue post-secondary studies at institutions such as the University of Victoria, University of British Columbia, University of Lethbridge, University of Toronto, McGill University and others; and in some cases to begin to develop a professional music career. The program offers excellent transferability and placement potential throughout Canada and abroad. Academic Advisors are available for help with university transfer options.
