Assessment
Mathematics
If you are a potential or current student who does not have the Math pre-requisites to enter a program or take a course here at Camosun College, you might need to take the Math Placement Test.
- This is not a test that you pass or fail: the results from the Placement Test will either allow you to enter the program or course of your choice without the published academic pre-requisites or indicate the level of academic upgrading to begin your work.
- If it has been more than two years since your last Math course, you are strongly encouraged to write the Math Placement Test.
- This test consists of 63 multiple choice questions and comes in two parts. Do as many of the questions as you can.
- Guessing is a bad idea, as it may result in you being placed in a course that will be too difficult for you.
- You will be required to show your work on separate pages so that a Math Instructor can review it if necessary.
- There is no time limit for writing the test but it will normally take between 1 and 3 hours.
- The first half of the test covers material from Grade 10 and below (pdf, 210kB) while the second half focuses on material from Grades 11 and 12 (pdf 234kB). Click on the above links to get sample questions (with answers) for each part. This will give you an idea of what the test will be like.
- If you wish to spend some time preparing before you write the test, a list of textbooks and appropriate sections is given with the above sample questions. These textbooks are available in the Library. If you require help working through these problems Math Tutors are available in Ewing 224 and Ewing 342; check the hours posted on the doors.
- In the event that you feel that your placement does not reflect your true level you can consult with the Assessment Center personnel to discuss your options.
- Arrangements to write this test are made through the Assessment Centre.
