Get started in becoming a leader in your community and gain an in-depth understanding of Aboriginal culture and tradition. The Indigenous Studies (IST) program is an exciting diploma program that provides you with knowledge and skills to pursue a career that involves leadership in Aboriginal communities.
IST gives you a relevant post-secondary education experience taught from an Aboriginal perspective. You get:
- a diploma that provides up to 60 university credits transferable to a variety of professional degrees
- courses in Indigenous Studies, Special Projects (course focussing on community development) Indigenous Art Studies, and Circle Seminars taught by Aboriginal instructors
- courses in Anthropology, Criminal Justice, English, History, and Sociology.
The Indigenous Studies program values your physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual well-being and will support you in your learning and personal growth. Throughout the program, you will be encouraged to make connection with and contribute to community.
Graduates of the program are prepared to take on a variety of employment options including leadership roles within Aboriginal communities or the larger public/private sectors or to continue into third year university degree programs including: Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Education, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.
This two-year, full-time program starts each year in September at our Lansdowne campus with some classes and special project work completed in community settings.
Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students are welcome in this program. Talk to one of our Aboriginal Advisors to learn more.
