Arinze Practicing Community Pharmacist

“The best thing about the IMHA program is it broadened my scope on mental illness and substance use programs and concurrent disorders.

This program developed my understanding and zeal to help those people with these challenges. It developed my knowledge of trauma, informed practice and contextual skills. The true test of my understanding of services and disconnection from therapy and realities of practice.”

IMHA graduate, June 2013

Brittany BA in Psychology from UVIC

“It is through this [Psychology] degree that I realized a passion for the field of mental health and addictions. The IMHA program has been an amazing experience. My favorite part of the program is that it has truly prepared me for work in the field. I am doing my practicum with an Assertive Community Treatment Team and it has been great to apply the skills I have learned in the program. I would highly recommend this program to individuals who want to expand their knowledge of mental health and substance use issues, and work in the field.”

IMHA graduate, June 2013

Lily Bachelor in Biology and Psychology

“I enjoyed the Interprofessional Mental Health and Addictions program as it was a practical and well-planned program with both theory and practicum.

The practicum component that followed the theory was a great opportunity to apply and utilize the skills, knowledge and information that we acquired during the first six months of the program. It is a great program for individuals who would like to work in the mental health and substance use field or later continue to do further education in clinical or counselling psychology.”

Melanie

“My practicum through the Military Family Resource Centre has given me experience in small group therapy, as well as comprehensive knowledge of community resources and system navigation of the Child and Youth Mental Health Services in Victoria.

The IMHA program has developed my practical knowledge of the professional field of mental health and substance use and taught me valuable counselling skills. I leave the program with confidence in my newly developed skills and a vision for best practices in mental health.”

George BA Religious Studies

“My background is in mindfulness and somatic approaches and wellness, with a BA in religious studies and 20 years practice and teaching yoga. My favorite aspect of the program is the connection to fellow students and the experience of seeing capacities for skilled helping grow in each of us.

My favorite part of the practicum was the connection to individuals with in the “system” both clinicians and clients, and the confirmation that care is available on a highly-skilled level.”

IMHA graduate, June 2013

David BA in Psychology from UVIC

“The IMHA program has given me some very solid, applicable and up-to-date tools and knowledge allowing me to enter the field of mental health with a level of understanding and confidence I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

My practicum experience has been very rich. During my time at the Victoria Youth Custody Centre, I saw how mental health is addressed within the youth justice context. During my time at the New Westminster mental health clinic I have had a chance to see how mental health is address in the wider context of community and the various method of working with community work together to help improve people and community health.”
