Health Care Assistant

Admission Requirements

Attendance at a program information session is required. Issues which may interfere with progress in the program will be addressed at this time.

Opportunities for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) will be offered to learners who wish to acquire credit in selected courses in the HCA program (resources permitting).

Step 1: Contact the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.

Step 2: Book an appointment with the Chair or Program Leader to discuss the suitability of PLA.

When you apply you will need to submit proof that you meet the following admission requirements.

Tip Where a letter grade is specified, you must have proof of that grade or higher.

English Language Competency

There are two options for meeting the English Language Competency Requirements (as set out by the BC Care Aide Registry), depending on your previous education:

English Educated
Applicants educated in an English-speaking environment/country with English language systems/institutions for a minimum of seven years or for four consecutive years at the secondary or post-secondary level.
Non-English Educated
Applicants not educated in an English-speaking environment/country with English language systems/institutions

Note: Applicants educated in an English-speaking environment as outlined in the first category may also submit proof of English competency with the folliowing test scores.

Health Care Assistant - General

Requirement English Educated Non-English Educated

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) within the past two years
    • IBT with an overall score of 76
    • no score lower than 20 in Speaking and Listening
    • no score lower than 18 in Reading and Writing
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or General within the past two years
    • with an overall score of 6
    • minimum of 6 in Speaking and Listening
    • no score lower than 5.5 in Reading and Writing
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT) within the past six months with minimum scores of:
    • Listening 7
    • Speaking 7
    • Reading 6
    • Writing 6
Info Session Attendance at a Health Care Assistant program information session. It is required to ensure applicants have a strong understanding of the expectations of the Health Care Assistant (HCA) program and the role of the HCA in the work environment. An online information session PDF is available for anyone unable to attend in person.

Health Care Assistant - ESL

    • IBT with an overall score of 56
    • no score lower than 15 in Speaking and Listening
    • no score lower than 13 in Reading and Writing
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or General within the past two years
    • with an overall score of 5.5
    • minimum of 5.5 in Speaking and Listening
    • no score lower than 5.0 in Reading and Writing
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT) within the past six months with minimum scores of:
    • Listening 6
    • Speaking 6
    • Reading 5
    • Writing 5
Informational Interview

Attend an informational interview with the Health Care Assistant – English Language Development instructor to confirm program expectations, and discuss oral communication skills.

Health Care Assistant - Indigenous

Indigenous Ancestry

Completion requirements

You must achieve a minimum of 70% (B-) in all academic courses and successfully complete the practicums and clinical placements to graduate with a Certificate in Health Care Assistant.
