Technical and Professional Communications

Gone are the days when other people did your writing and presenting for you. Today, people working in trades, business, and technical professions need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively. Industries increasingly recognise the value of clear, concise, precise writing, and effective presenting. Every two years the Business Council of BC conducts a poll to determine the top attributes sought by employers. Communications Skills always rank No.1 in every industry surveyed. This category covers the ability to read, write, speak, present, listen well, and use the appropriate body language. At Camosun College we aim to equip students with all of these skills.

Camosun College's technical and professional communications students learn writing skills that they will apply in their workplace. Students write procedure and instructional manuals, proposals, reports, letters, memos, and emails. They design documents with high readability using illustrations and graphics. Class content is program specific, so students leave knowing the writing techniques, formats and conventions of their chosen field.

Second-year technical and professional communications students learn the principles and dynamics of working in group situations. They deliver high quality presentations with visuals to varying audience sizes and complexities. They also design and prepare trade-show displays where they interact with the public. All material, when appropriate, is strictly documented using IEEE format.
