Biography
Springing from a background in language and computer technology research, Anita Kess specializes in Technical Writing and Composition. She holds a Master's degree in Theoretical Linguistics and a Diploma in Applied Linguistics from the University of Victoria.
In her early years, she worked in a public/private research consortium, doing research in the analysis and synthesis of speech. She worked with a team that developed computer speech aids for people with communicative handicaps. As a graduate student, she conducted sociolinguistic field work in language communities as diverse as Chinese and Nuuchahnulth and published her findings in a peer-reviewed international journal.
Anita is the co-author of two popular English textbooks published and distributed by Seibido Publishing in Tokyo and a workbook for brain injury rehabilitation specialists. She has also written numerous journal articles and reviews, and presented papers at many international congresses and conventions. She is also the winner of an Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in Austin, Texas. Anita has also served as the Chair of the English department and acted as Associate Dean of Arts and Science.
