Which English 12 alternative courses should I take?
We can help you choose the right English 12 option—the one that best matches your goals and your current English skills. There are four pathways to consider.
Your goal is to:
- complete high school requirements for a program offered at Camosun or elsewhere,
- meet requirements for the BC Adult Graduation diploma, or
- gain English skills needed for employment
You are ramping up for further academic post-secondary studies like first year college or university transfer writing courses.
Choose this single course if you want to meet an English 12 prerequisite with a business/technical perspective.
If you are a non-native English speaker, choose this option to improve your reading, writing, and speaking skills for college or university transfer programs.
How do I qualify for Camosun’s English 12 alternative courses?
You are admitted based on your previous educational background and experience.
On a high school transcript, a letter grade of
- “C” or better in English 10, 11 or “C” in 12 will get you into ENGL 092 plus 094 or 096; and
- “C” or better in English 11 or “C” in 12 will get you into ENGL 103 plus 104 or 106; or ENGL 140.
No transcript? Been out of school for awhile? Take an assessment.
If your transcripts are missing or your writing and reading skills are a bit rusty, it’s best to start with an English Assessment. This might save you time and money if your assessment shows you already qualify for your college program. If that’s not the case, your assessment will show where you should focus your efforts. The important thing is to match your needs with the right course (or courses) so that you can accomplish your goals.
Why does Camosun turn English 12 into two courses?
Not everyone needs both components of English 12—composition and literature. By splitting English 12 into separate courses, you focus on specific skills. You can develop your composition skills and then apply them to the literature component.
What grade will I need in a Camosun English 12 alternative course to meet requirements?
If you’re looking to use your Camosun course(s) for admission into a Camosun program, you will need a “C” grade or higher because our courses are specifically tailored to prepare you for our programs. This compares favourably with the “C+” in a high school English 12 course that is needed to meet admission requirements for most Camosun programs.
How much does it cost?
Tuition for upgrading courses varies according to the number and level of the course(s) you take. We also offer upgrading and Access career certificate program “packages”. Look for “Fees and financial aid” in the left-hand sidebar of each program webpage to see program costs.
