English Language Development (ESL)

Admission Requirements

Follow these three steps to apply and register in an English Language Development program and improve your English skills at Camosun.

Step 1: Prepare for admission

Select your category

International Students

You should:

  • be 19 years or older
  • meet the guidelines established by Citizenship and Immigration Canada for international students studying in Canada
  • have your legal documents ready

If you are an International Student, you should contact Camosun College International and they will assist you with Step 2: Placement, and Step 3: Application and Registration.

Permanent Residents (Landed Immigrants) and Canadian Citizens

You should:

  • be 19 years or older
  • meet the prerequisites for each course OR take an English language assessment to help us place you at the correct level
  • have your legal documents ready

If you are a Permanent Resident (Landed Immigrant), Refugee, or Canadian Citizen and do not meet the prerequisites, go to step 2.

If you are a Permanent Resident (Landed Immigrant), Refugee or Canadian Citizen and do meet the prerequisites, go to step 3.

Step 2: ESL placement assessment

Make an appointment for the ESL placement test

An ESL assessment provides a snapshot of your current English as a second language skills to determine what level of ESL programming would be the best fit for you.

Second language speakers of English are encouraged, wherever possible, to take the Duolingo English Test (DET) for admission into Camosun. An additional online speaking and/or writing test may be required with an ELD Assessor (at no additional cost).

  • Limited remote delivery of the Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT) is also available for students unable to afford the DET fee.
  • Limited English Language Development face-to-face placement assessments can be arranged for students unable to access the Duolingo or CLBPT remotely. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reduced the number of face-to-face assessments the English Language Development department is able to offer.

Step 3: Application and registration

Apply: Complete an application through EducationPlannerBC or print an application and email it to Admissions.

Register:

ELD 020 to ELD 064 - When you are ready to register, please email eldregistration@camosun.bc.ca  and our staff will assist you.

ELD 072 to ELD 104 you will go through Registration

Participation requirements

If you are registered in ELD 032, 033, 034, 042, 044, 052, 054, 062, or 064, you are also registered in 2.5 lab hours to be arranged individually.

Completion requirements

Certificate in English Language Development–Level 1

To graduate with a Certificate in English Language Development–Level 1, you must successfully complete ELD 052 and ELD 054 indicating you have developed the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills required to enter Access programs.

Certificate in English Language Development–Level 2

To graduate with a Certificate in English Language Development–Level 2, you must successfully complete either ELD 092 and ELD 094, or ELD 097 indicating you have developed the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for entry into Camosun's college-level programs.

Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) equivalencies

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) equivalencies have been approved for Camosun College's English Language Development courses. These standards can be verified in the most recent BC ESL Articulation Guide. PDF

Other supports to consider

  • See Financial Aid if you need financial assistance.
  • Contact the Centre for Accessible Learning if you have a documented disability. They can help arrange services and supports and act as a resource for you and your instructors.
  • Public Transit and the Camosun Express are both efficient and convenient ways to get to our campuses. The Universal Bus Pass—included in your student fees—allows you access to buses in the Victoria region.
