Info Session Attendance at a scheduled Education Assistant and Community Support program Information Session is mandatory. If you are unable to attend a scheduled session, please contact the Program Leader.
Experience* The EACS Program is waiving the admission requirement of 40 hours of volunteering/working in the field until further notice. This decision has been made in partnership with agencies in the field to reduce non-essential personnel in the field during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

*Volunteer Experience

Your volunteer experience must be with individuals in the community (school or otherwise) who have developmental disabilities such as intellectual, physical, sensory and/or brain-based disabilities. The purpose of this is to ensure that you have had some experience with the individuals that the program is focused on in terms of practice in both the community or school settings.

Please note, generalized settings do not count towards your volunteer time; the setting must be related to disability. In addition, if you have a family member with a disability, this could count towards half of the required hours.

Program recommendations

This is a popular program and fills up fast. You’re encouraged to complete PSYC 154 and ENGL 151 prior to starting the program.

It is strongly recommended you have basic computer literacy, including experience with keyboarding and basic Internet search and email skills.

Students may be required to provide documentation of the following by the practicum site:

  • A TB test may be required. Students are responsible for the cost of this test.
  • Students are highly recommended to maintain current immunizations as per the Practice Education Guidelines of B.C. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines.

Participation requirements

Once accepted into the program:

  • Criminal Record Check: During this program, you may be working with children and/or vulnerable adults. In order to participate in work integrated learning experiences, such as a practicum or work term, you will need to complete a criminal record check through the Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General for Camosun College. Camosun will email you with information on how to complete the Criminal Record Check (CRC) process. You are responsible for all associated costs.

Completion requirements

You need to achieve a minimum of 60% (“C”) in all courses within the program, and successfully complete EACS 111 and EACS 112 to graduate with a Certificate in Education Assistant and Community Support.
