Biography
Mr. Surridge received his B.Sc. (1998) at the University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops and a M.Sc. (2000) in Organic Chemistry from the University of Calgary. The M.Sc. thesis project was sponsored by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Thesis title – Isolation and purification of Molybdenum compounds from Alfalfa grown on Mine Tailings).
Mr. Surridge has held positions as an analytical chemist in both government and industry labs working on everything from toxic environmental contaminants (such as pesticides and plasticizers like Bisphenol A) to nutraceutical health supplements (such as St John’s Wort and Ginseng).
Teaching experience has included positions at both Grant MacEwan College and Camosun College teaching 1st and 2nd year courses. Courses taught at Camosun College include;
- Chemistry 060 Introduction to Chemistry (now CHEM 100)
- Chemistry 100: Introductory Chemistry
- Chemistry 110 College Chemistry
- Chemistry 121 General Chemistry II
- Chemistry 224 Introduction to Analytical Chemistry
- Chemistry 259 Quality Assurance in Environmental Chemistry
Mr. Surridge is currently chairing the Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology program (known as the ACBT program). This includes coordinating many activities aimed at connecting students with industry, professional programs, and university transfer options. In the summer months applied research is carried out which sometimes includes the mentoring and training of an ACBT student as part of their internship. One example includes collaborations with Dr. Michael Ikonomou at the Institute of Ocean Sciences. Here the student is trained on laboratory procedures used in ultra-trace analysis of organic chemicals. Projects deal with topics in environmental monitoring and marine toxicology. Other past applied research topics includes chemical ecology and toxic plants. For more specifics please review some of the recent publications.
