Certified Dental Assistant

Admission Requirements

The next intake for the Certified Dental Assistant program will be September. This program is in high demand and there is a possible one-year waitlist.

If you are interested in CDA, you are advised to investigate the duties of a certified dental assistant by spending at least two days of observation in a dental office, thereby gaining a working understanding of the career. Attendance at a program information session is highly recommended prior to submitting an application to this program.

When you apply you will need to submit proof that you meet the following admission requirements.

Participation requirements

  • Criminal Record Check: During this program, you may be working with children and/or vulnerable adults. In order to participate in work integrated learning experiences, such as a practicum or work term, you will need to complete a criminal record check through the Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General for Camosun College. Camosun will email you with information on how to complete the Criminal Record Check (CRC) process. You are responsible for all associated costs.
  • Students must provide evidence of their immunization status. Students are highly recommended to maintain current immunizations as per the Practice Education Guidelines of B.C. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines. Failure to comply with immunization guidelines could result in the health care organization or the College barring the individual from the clinical/practicum setting until proof of immunity is provided and/or until a communicable disease outbreak is declared over. This could impact a student’s ability to successfully complete the clinical/practicum placement course and/or a clinical/community rotation.
  • You'll be required to attend an orientation on the first day of class or risk losing your seat in the program;
  • On the first day of class you are required to submit a completed, current, Standard First Aid Certificate. It is your responsibility to ensure that the CPR C portion of this certificate does not expire before the completion of the program. (if you have been given only 3 weeks notice for entering the program you have until November 1 to take this training.)
  • Students must provide evidence they do not have active TB. Acceptable evidence is a negative TB skin test or a negative chest x-ray. Evidence must be dated no more than six months before practicum start date. Students are responsible for the cost of the testing. An additional TB test is required after each possible exposure to TB and/or travel within an area where there is a known prevalence of TB.
  • The work environment in which the CDA student / graduate will be employed requires extensive hand washing and sitting for long periods of time. If you have a serious skin disorders such as psoriasis, dermatitis or latex allergy, you should consider carefully before making an application to this program. For the same reason, those with back, arm or neck problems or significant health challenges are advised to consult with the Chair.
  • Facial and oral body piercing are discouraged due to the potential risk of infection.
  • Late afternoon or evening classes may be scheduled.

During the CDA program you will:

  • Serve as practice clients and will receive a variety of treatments related to the practice of the CDA.
  • Promote the CDA program Integrated Practice 3 (Public Clinic) and assist with the recruitment and screening of child clients for preventive appointments.

You should have basic computer literacy including experience with keyboarding and basic Internet search and email skills.

Completion requirements

You must achieve a minimum of 70% ("B-") in all academic courses and successfully complete the clinical placements to graduate with a Certified Dental Assistant Certificate.
