Alumni Profile - Loni Nightingale
Bachelor of Business Administration - HR Management & Leadership
Loni completing her BBA in HR Management & Leadership at Camosun College in 2009, and moved into her current position at Columbia Fuels as an HR Generalist. She was actively involved in the Co-op program at the school, which she believes gave her an edge when finding employment.
As Camosun’s Bachelors is an applied degree, two work terms are required. Her first work term was for the Ministry of Forests doing data entry, which Loni feels was a huge opportunity for gaining experience and networking. Based on her employer’s feedback, Loni was chosen to take on the challenging position that would become her second work term, HR Assistant for Columbia Fuels. “The teachers and faculty really stick their necks out for you.” She further states that if it wasn’t for certain teachers believing in her, she would not be where she is today.
One of the most important things Loni believes she learned at Camosun were computer skills. These technical courses gave her the foundation skills that are transferable to any position. Additionally, the organizational behaviour and group work in many of the courses showed her how to work with a variety of people.
Loni shows how business credentials and co-op opens doors. “It’s about doing the best job you can, regardless of the position, to show that you are capable of doing more.” She believes that Camosun credentials are just as valuable, if not more valuable, as other schools because of the experience you have by graduation. She further states that by applying yourself, you get the leg up because Camosun teachers have great networks and years of experience.
