Apprenticeship Training

Your Place in the World

Camosun is Vancouver Island's largest provider of trades training, and is known for training excellence in more than 20 trades and apprenticeship programs.

At Camosun Design, build and power your career.

What you need to know

You must be registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) before you are eligible to register into apprenticeship classes at Camosun.

A common route used to obtain an apprenticeship within a specific trade is to begin in a trades foundation program. A foundation program provides you with the skills and knowledge necessary to begin work in an industry at an entry-level position.

What you want to know

The length of an apprenticeship can range from one to five years, but most require four years to complete. The amount of time you'll spend doing your in-school training also varies by trade, from 5 to 10 weeks, annually.

In some trades, completing a full apprenticeship program can also lead to inter-provincial Red Seal certification, which means you have attained a level of excellence that is recognized throughout Canada.

Foundation and Pre-employment programs

Foundation and pre-employment certificate programs run six to ten months each and provide a comprehensive introduction to the trade. These programs combine in-class learning with hands-on practical skills, making you well-positioned for entry-level employment or to begin an apprentice. Foundation programs also provide a head-start on apprenticeship training by covering the technical learning outcomes required in your first apprenticeship year. Foundation grads receive credit for Level 1 technical training as well as some of the required training hours. Learn more.

Member of the Industry Training Authority (ITA)

The Industry Training Authority (ITA) leads and coordinates British Columbia's skilled trades system. ITA works with employers, employees, industry, labour, training providers and government to issue credentials, manage apprenticeships, set program standards, and increase opportunities in the trades.

The ITA is a provincial crown agency and is governed by a nine-person Board of Directors, who have skills, experience and qualifications directly related to the trades. The ITA was established in 2004. Learn more.
