Apprenticeship
Admission requirements
Apprenticeship is a two-way agreement between you and your employer to provide you with appropriate opportunities to become fully competent in the trade of your choice. You will be responsible for self-registration of technical training needed throughout the apprenticeship and to notify your employer of apprenticeship class enrolment. You must be registered with the Industry Training Centre (ITA) before you are eligible to register into classes at Camosun.
The ITA registers all apprenticeship agreements and providesRegistration numbers. It is also responsible for scheduling challenges and certificate examinations. To obtain a Registration number, or for information on challenging a particular level, please contact Industry Training at 1-866-660-6011. For ITA application forms and further information, please refer to the Industry Training Authority website at www.itabc.ca.
If you plan to become an apprentice in a skilled trade we recommend that you complete a Grade 12 education or equivalent that includes appropriate Math and English courses. In some trades, a Grade 10 education is still an acceptable minimum standard. In others, potential apprentices in some trades may be required to write an entrance examination. Individual employers may also have their own educational requirements. If you’re missing some of the admission requirements, Camosun can help. We offer upgrading courses in a variety of formats to meet your needs.
A common route used to obtain an apprenticeship within a specific trade is to begin in a trades training Foundation program (formerly known as entry level training - ELT) , such as the programs offered at Camosun and other trades training providers. A Foundation program provides you with the skills and knowledge necessary to begin work in an industry at an entry-level position. This employment often leads to an apprenticeship with all its advantages including earning wages while learning a trade. Although Foundation Training is not compulsory for most trades, many joint training committees and employers recognize it as a prerequisite for employment and/or apprenticeship.
The ITA recognizes Foundation programs in many trades as the equivalent to first year apprentice technical training and worked-based hours credit towards your apprenticeship program. For further information refer to the appropriate ITA Foundation program profile.
Participation requirements
The student is ultimately responsible for his/her learning and meeting the requirements of the course and/or program.. All apprenticeship students are encouraged to communicate issues concerning their course and program with their instructor, Chair/Program Leader, respectively. The School encourages full participation and active learning by attending all scheduled classes.
All trades programs have a mandatory attendance requirement. A student who misses three days in an apprenticeship class will be required to withdraw from the course. In exceptional cases, the Chair may recommend an exemption to this policy. The final decision on withdrawal from a program will rest with the Dean.
Completion requirements
All apprenticeship programs require an overall grade of 70% to pass the technical training portion..
