Certificate in Activity Assistant

Helping seniors stay active and engaged

Developing activities for seniors with cognitive and physical challenges

In this part-time program, you'll learn to plan and implement, under supervision, individual and group activities in a variety of settings including care facilities, assisted living settings, adult day care programs, client homes, mental health facilities or residential group homes. Experienced Home Support Assistants, Resident Care Aides and Health Care Assistants are well-suited to this program.

Part-time program for those who work

Offered every spring, the Activity Assistant program has been designed for working students. Classes are scheduled over six full weekends at our Lansdowne campus. As well, you'll get extensive hands-on experience with a 120-hour practicum at the end of the program.

Taught by professionals who bring the real world into the classroom, the curriculum is spread out over several months, allowing you to better integrate your new knowledge and skills into your career.

What do Activity Assistant graduates do?

As an Activity Worker or Activity Aide, you will work with older adults who have cognitive and physical challenges and collaborate with team members in various settings to plan and implement activities for seniors. In addition to organizing activities, you may work with volunteers, advocate for the seniors you serve and facilitate ongoing relationships outside the care setting.

Successful Activity Workers are great communicators who work well within a multi-disciplinary team setting. These kind and caring people are dependable, willing to take direction and are effective in emergency situations.

In BC, there is a high demand for Activity Workers on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Wages are comparable to that of a Resident Care Attendant.
