My interest in Chemistry started in first year at UVic. After doing research on potential for work as a laboratory technician, I realized that I needed at least two years of relevant work experience in the field, so I joined the Chemistry co-op program. This gave me an opportunity to gain relevant work experience in Chemistry. In combination with my academic training and work place learning, my confidence on writing exams and performing laboratory work grew stronger with each co-op work term. On graduation with a BSc in 1992, I received co-op distinction, and I was offered work with different organizations. However, my career focus changed towards molecular design and synthesis. I obtained my Ph.D in 1997 at UVic on synthesis and design of Macrocyclic Ligands in Lanthanide and Group 3 Chemistry. For the next 18 months, I worked as a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary. In 1999, I returned to UVic, and worked as a term instructor, and I taught first, second, and third year Chemistry. Shortly after in 2001, I held a contract teaching position with Selkirk College in Castlegar, BC. Next, I returned to UVic in a permanent role as the Chemistry Co-op coordinator in 2002. For the next four years, I taught, mentored, and developed undergraduates into professional chemist. In 2006, I joined Camosun College as a continuing Faculty member, and I am now serving Camosun students as the Chair of Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology.
