Early Care and Learning (ELC) examines the health, safety and nutritional needs of young children from birth to age eight. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the educator in providing safe and nurturing environments to ensure high quality care. You'll earn 2 post secondary credits towards the ELC certificate or diploma program. Sponsored students also earn 4 high school elective credits towards graduation (PSIB 12A ELC). Starts Fall 2010 (14 Weeks)—starting September 7, 2010 to December 21, 2010
The program
- is designed for those who wish to work with children in a daycare setting
- is a requirement for daycare workers
- scheduled weekly online classes and required participation in group discussions
- 2 hours minimum per week reading from required text
- 2 hours minimum per week dedicated to course work
- individual and Group assignments that require initiative
- grading includes quizzes, assignments and participation

Step 1: Preparation & Prerequisites
- mature, self directed Grade 12 student
- English 11 with C+ or higher.
- Recommendations
- Secondary School to provide ongoing support to student during the program through regular check-ins and access to online support services.
- you'll complete the D2L instructional video tutorials prior to starting the ELC online course.
Step 2: Secondary School program
For students whose tuition is sponsored by the school district, a completed sponsorship form is required (pdf).
Step 3: College program @ Camosun’s Interurban campus
- Apply: Complete the South Island Partnership Lync Course application form and include all fees.
- School submits the application to the South Island Partnership Office.

Cautionary notes
- you're required to participate in weekly online classes
- this is not a self paced course. Students should be prepared to encounter the rigor and demand of a first year college course
- you should be prepared to participate in weekly online dialogue with other students and group members, and submit weekly work and assignments by assigned due dates
- you'll need to be self motivated, able to manage online course work along with their regular secondary school course work to successfully complete the course
- Some students struggle with online learning methods
