e-Work Courses
Each course includes activities to build grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation skills, and addresses relevant socio-cultural competencies and intercultural awareness.
PRESENTATIONS
This writing and speaking course focuses on creating and delivering effective workplace presentations. Learners will develop their speaking skills to improve the delivery of their presentations and also learn the skills to organize and express their ideas. This course will build learner’s confidence in presenting information to an audience.
SMALL TALK
In addition to, and often interspersed with their regular work-related interactions, employees have social conversations with co-workers to build community at work. This speaking and listening course identifies the characteristics of workplace small talk, and suitable topics for small talk. Learners will practice and acquire the skills to understand and use small talk to build workplace networks.
TELEPHONING
This speaking and listening course explores some of the key uses of the telephone at work. The course is designed to help learners build their confidence and skill using the telephone. It covers telephone vocabulary and phrases, and provides plenty of practice with the language and conversation management skills involved in placing and receiving calls. The course also includes the use of voice mail and answering machines.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
This listening and speaking course focuses on the skills needed to provide excellent customer and client service in the Canadian work context. Learners will practice and acquire the skills to understand and use appropriate language, and behaviour, in a workplace setting to improve customer/client care. Learners will be better able to identify and respond to customer needs, including complaints.
DEALING WITH PROBLEMS
The workplace brings with it challenging issues that need to be addressed and resolved diplomatically. This course identifies how to indicate problems, suggest solutions and propose changes at work in a sensitive manner. Learners will practice and acquire these skills to communicate more effectively in the work environment.
REPORTS
Reports are an essential form of communication in all workplaces. This course instructs learners on how to write clear well-organized reports for a variety of purposes. The course focuses on helping learners understand how to organize and group information into manageable standardized elements from beginning to end. Learners will practice using key report writing vocabulary and expressions. Editing skills are also addressed.
INSTRUCTIONS
Giving and following instructions are essential skills in any workplace. This listening and speaking course identifies the characteristics of effective oral instructions. Learners will acquire and practice the language and skills to give and follow instructions for familiar workplace processes and procedures. The course also addresses the oral skills that employees need in order to work more safely, and incorporates a variety of workplace safety topics.
MEETINGS
Meetings and formal discussions are a common workplace activity and employee attendance and participation is expected. This speaking, listening and reading course identifies ways to increase participation in workplace meetings and better understand the content of workplace meetings. Learners will practice specific conversation management strategies, vocabulary, and listening skills required to participate and co-manage meetings and formal discussion.
CAREER BUILDING
This reading, listening and speaking course focuses on two key aspects of building your career in the Canadian workplace: giving and receiving feedback and showing initiative. Canadian employers value employees who have well developed skills in both these areas. This course assists learners with the language, vocabulary and cultural considerations. Learners will be able to navigate more confidently and effectively the employer expectations and workplace norms associated with career building.
