SPP 120 Introduction to Sport Performance Psychology

Effective date: January 2017

Students will be introduced to psychological concepts related to enhancing sport performance. Specific performance-enhancement techniques are discussed and evaluated in terms of appropriateness to the performance need. A case-study approach is employed to identify the athlete and/or coach responsibility in managing mental preparation strategies.

SPP 140 Sport Nutrition

Effective date: September 2011

Students will be introduced to nutritional principles relating to sport performance in a variety of training and competition environments. Energy systems for different sports are discussed with specific attention to disabled performers and extreme sport conditions. Ethical issues such as body image in sport are discussed in terms of the nutritionist's role.

SPP 150 Sport Biomechanics

Effective Date: May 2015

This course applies biomechanical principles through an intense exploration of the kinematics and kinetics of a chosen skill. Students explore the mechanical basis upon which success in the chosen skill depends. Students work independently to design and execute testing and analysis to develop insight into the determinants of success in that skill.

SPP 163 Performance Analysis, Testing & Measurement

Effective date: January 2015

This course covers the main principles that underlie many of the current practices of measuring athletic performance including: physiology testing, athlete tactical & technical skill execution, and psychological readiness and performance. The underpinning physiological principles associated with various exercise testing procedures will be critically analyzed and discussed. Students will be expected to develop the skills and competencies that will enable them to select and administer a range of tests as part of athlete performance profiling. By the end of the course, successful students will be capable of running a wide variety of tactical, technical and physiological assessments.

This course is designed to enhance a coach's competency in dealing with developmental and emerging high performance athletes. The course is aligned with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Multi-Sport modules and provides the coach with a learning environment that develops core competencies related to interaction, leadership, critical reflection, problem solving and value-based decision making. Course content includes modules in Making Ethical Decisions; Conflict Resolution; Coaching and Leading Effectively; Developing Athletic Abilities; Psychology of Performance; Prevention and Recovery; Leading Drug Free Sport; and Designing a Sport Program.

SPP 210 Critical Thinking in Sport

Effective date: January 2014

This course examines the basic nature of reasoning and the fallacies which prevent good reasoning as it relates to the application to sport. Emphasis will be upon understanding the logical structure of argument and on recognizing the influence of emotional persuasion in sport-related issues such as media presentation, socio-political decisions and one's own arguments. Both the theory and practice of critical thinking are covered through examining the ideas of philosophers such as Plato, Descartes, Hume, Russell, Wittgenstein, and Sartre and populist sport figures such as Vince Lombardi, Scotty Bowman and John Wooden.
