NAUT CG2 Cargo Level 2

Effective date: September 2017

This is a course designed to provide mariners with a basic knowledge of the following regulations and documents:

  • Canadian Code of Safe practice for ships carrying timber deck cargoes;
  • Cargo, Fumigation and Tackle Regulations;
  • Code of practice for the safe loading and unloading of Bulk carriers (BLU Code);
  • Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing;
  • Code of Safe Working Practices for Self-unloading Vessels;
  • International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code;
  • Safe Container Convention Regulations;
  • Safe Working Practices Regulations;
  • TP 10944 - Notice to Shipmasters Loading Coal;
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act;
  • Transportation and Dangerous Goods Regulations;
  • SOLAS;
  • and knowledge of the safe handling, stowage and securing of cargoes including dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes and their effect on the safety of life and of the ship.

NAUT COM1 Communications Level 1

Effective date: September 2017

This is a basic course in ship communication using distress signals, international code flags, coding and decoding messages, the use of Radio Aids to Marine Navigation, Annual Notices to Mariners and the International Code of Signals, and the use of standard marine communication phrases.

This is a basic course in ship communication using Morse code sent by flashing light or whistle as per the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (Col. Regs.).

NAUT CP1 Chartwork and Pilotage Level 1

Effective date: September 2017

This course provides the deck officer with a basic knowledge of the practices and theory involved in piloting a vessel. Topics covered in this course include: pilotage, steering, symbols, sailing directions, lists of lights, tidal currents, navigation in confined waters, navigation aids, buoyage system, bridge practices, charts, chart usage, fixing position, estimating position, courses, conversion of course, distance measurement, range of visibility, reliability of charts, publications, tidal terms, calculation of tides, set and rate of tides, records.

NAUT EPS Electronic Positioning System

Effective date: April 2018

This course will give the learner an understanding of the electronic positioning systems on a modern bridge. This includes Loran C, E-Loran, Global Navigation System (including-DGPS), Glonass, and Gailed Systems. Knowledge of Depth Sounders and Speed & Distance Measurement. Knowledge of all marine navigation aids, AIS, DVR, Magnetic & Gyro, Compasses, Radar & Arpa.

NAUT GSK3 General Ship Knowledge Level 3

This is a course designed to provide mariners with a basic knowledge of the following acts, regulations, codes and orders:

  • Boat and Fire Drill and means of exit Regulations;
  • Canada Labour Code;

  • Marine Occupational Safety and Health Regulations;
  • Marine Personnel Regulations;

Topics include: design and construction of various types of vessels, welding techniques, stress of materials, stability calculations for intact and damaged vessel with emphasis on practical skills, use of a ship's stability booklet, and calculations related to ship's drafts, trim, list, and initial stability.

NAUT SEN1A Simulated Electronic Navigation Level 1A

Effective date: September 2017

Students acquire basic knowledge of navigating instruments through an introduction to navigating instruments such as Radar, ARPA, Loran, ECDIS, Gyro, GPS, Echo sounder, and other electronic navigation instruments. Students study the following topics: use of controls; derivation of information; data correction and use of data in position fixing and collision avoidance; recognition of false information and malfunctions; radar plotting techniques.

NAUT SEN-O Simulated Electronic Navigation - Operational

Effective date: February 2018

Students will cover the requirements of the STCW convention of 1978. Thorough knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and the principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch in a simulated environment. Competencies promoting safety of life at sea.
