Students will learn safe techniques for setting up various live event venues such as theatres, studios and meeting rooms. This hands-on course introduces students to skills such as assembling stages and flats, handling props, coiling cable, and using appropriate knots and tools as required. Teamwork and safety are emphasized in a series of hands on exercises and set ups.

LEAV 106 Live Event Operations

Students will learn to prepare, operate and strike live events. Students will interpret diagrams and instructions to safely organize set assembly, lighting, and sound reproduction. As well, students will organize and schedule events, assign and monitor staff, keep accurate records and arrange for necessary permits and permissions.

LEAV 115 Lighting Fundamentals

Effective date: September 2017

Students will learn about lighting in a combination of lectures and hands-on lab work covering concepts such as illumination measurement and shadow quality. Students will set up and maintain lighting grids, fixtures, and dimmer boards. Strict safety protocols on handling electrical equipment and working at heights will be emphasized.

LEAV 125 Live Audio Fundamentals

Effective date: September 2017

Students will learn skills in setting up live audio production equipment, and creating an appropriate mix of sounds. Students will learn how to reproduce sounds of varying frequency and volume using knowledge gained through discussion of wave theory, signal to noise ratios, and other key concepts. The function and placement of microphones and speakers are also explored through hands-on practice. Students will set up, mix and record small productions in a controlled space.

In this course, students will learn how to create a basic mastered audio product using multiple tracks. Students will learn the basics of working with multiple track recording devices and techniques for playback and mastering in a hands-on environment, to create optimized digital audio files.

Students will work in teams to create multiple-camera live video productions. Students will experience positions such as director, audio board operator, switcher and graphics display, camera operations, and studio management. Students will also assemble sets, create and implement lighting plans, and connect audio and video components. Students can use these skills to work in live coverage of sports and entertainment events as well as live television broadcasts.

Students will learn the fundamental skills of working in a small to medium size audio-visual service department that provides audio and visual projection systems, distributes equipment, and manages remote communications. Using theoretical concepts and hands-on applications, students will work under time pressure with clients and workplace teams. Emphasis will be placed on accurate and respectful interpersonal communication.

LEAV 155 Capstone Project

Effective date: September 2017

This is a project-based course which requires students to integrate knowledge and skills acquired in The Live Event and Audio-Visual Technician program. Students will plan, organize and participate in a project such as live event, theatre, multiple camera production, audio recording or audio-visual services. Further this is a project which gives students the opportunity to work with a client or mentor from outside of the program. Students must work in teams if they want to produce their own live event.
