The list below describes each course we offer, as well as prerequisites (if any) and a few other details. (How to read a course description).

To find out when a course is actually offered during a particular time period, search for that course on Camlink and search for sections. Remember, in order to register for a credit course or courses you first need to apply to a college program. Apply now!

Note: Students should select a course most appropriate to their level of knowledge and may wish to consult with an Academic Advisor to determine tentative placements. The French Department will administer formal placement tests in the first week of classes (or any time between September and June). Students should be aware that course registrations will be subject to change.

All courses make extensive use of the oral language and are geared only to Anglophones learning French as a second language. To meet course and individual objectives, students must attend classes regularly, do homework, and spend a minimum of two hours a week with language monitors. Students are also encouraged to enquire at the French Department about exchange and immersion programs.

FREN 102 Basic French 1

A first course for students having little or no previous knowledge of French. Emphasis is on conversation, but also includes some reading and writing. Not open to students with French 11 or equivalent in the last two years.

FREN 103 Basic French 2

A continuation of FREN 102. A first-year course for students having little knowledge of French. Not open to students with French 11 or equivalent in the last two years.

FREN 110 Intermediate French 1

French language in conversation, reading, and writing. Students are taught, through frequent assignments, to express themselves orally and in writing on course material and to master conjugation of most French verb tenses. Not open to students with French 12 or equivalent in the last two years.

FREN 111 Intermediate French 2

A continuation of FREN 110 and completion of French verb tenses. Includes frequent written assignments, independent reading and writing, as well as intensive oral practice. Not open to students with French 12 or equivalent in the last two years.

FREN 112 Intensive Oral French 1

Students will improve their oral French in expressing their opinions on a variety of subjects from weekly reading. The course is a review of Basic Grammar and vocabulary practice to the point of relative fluency in oral expression. Students must complete their oral work with monitors.

FREN 114 Intensive Oral French 2

Students will improve speed and accuracy in oral French in expressing their opinions on a variety of subjects from weekly readings. The course is a review of basic French structures, with refinement of pronunciation and vocabulary. Students must complete their oral work with monitors.

FREN 120 French Language & Literature 1

Intensive oral and written review of grammar and study of short stories and one contemporary novel. Instruction is in French and involves student participation.

FREN 121 French Language & Literature 2

A continuation of FREN 120, emphasizing speaking and writing in French; study of two plays.

FREN 212 Oral and Written Practice 1

For students well grounded in French grammar who want to increase control in written and spoken French. Weekly compositions, text commentary and discussion are based on short texts from Canada and France. Work with francophone monitors is mandatory. Course delivery is on Village 900 in conjunction with classroom seminars.

FREN 214 Oral and Written Practice 2

Further development of listening comprehension and the skill of writing with a self-directed review of grammar. Weekly composition, text commentary and oral discussion are based on short texts from various authors. Work with francophone monitors is mandatory. Course delivery is on Village 900 in conjunction with classroom seminars.

FREN 220 French Literature Pre-1800

This course is an introduction to literature. In studying a selection of French literary masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, attention is given to their historical and literary analyses. Regular practice in speaking and writing, short com­positions and essays will be assigned.

FREN 221 French Literature Since 1800
