Sport Performance
SPP 120 Intro to Sport Performance Psych
(3 credits) F (3,0,0,0,0)
Students will be introduced to psychological concepts related to enhancing sport performance. Specific performance-enhancement techniques are discussed and evaluated in terms of appropriateness to the performance need. A case-study approach is employed to identify the athlete and/or coach responsibility in managing mental preparation strategies.

SPP 140 Sport Nutrition
(3 credits) F (2,0,1,0,0)
Students will be introduced to nutritional principles relating to sport performance in a variety of training and competition environments. Energy systems for different sports are discussed with specific attention to disabled performers and extreme sport conditions. Ethical issues such as body image in sport are discussed in terms of the nutritionist’s role.

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in Biology 12, or BIOL 080, or BIOL 100, or equivalent.
Open to SPP students only.
SPP 150 Sport Biomechanics
(3 credits) W (2,0,2,0,0)
This course applies biomechanical principles through an intense exploration of the kinematics and kinetics of a chosen skill. Students explore the mechanical basis upon which success in the chosen skill depends. Students work independently to design and execute testing and analysis to develop insight into the determinants of success in that skill.

Prerequisite(s): "C" in Principles of Math 11, or Pre-calculus 11, or Foundations of Math 11, or MATH 073, or assessment; and "C+" in Biology 12, or BIOL 080, or BIOL 100, or equivalent.
Open to SPP students only.
SPP 160 Principles of Sport Training
(3 credits) F (2,0,2,0,0)
Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the science of physical fitness and training. They will analyze the concepts of physical fitness and training in relation to health and sports performance. In addition, they will review the different types of fitness, their underlying determinants and the training strategies and adaptations that are used to improve these capabilities.

SPP 171 Performance Conditioning 1
(1 credit) F (0,0,0,3,0)
The aim of this course is to allow the student to reflect on an annual training program and initiate appropriate changes to achieve a performance outcome. The course will analyze the efficacy of a range of training modalities and approaches to achieving physical conditioning goals.
Prerequisite(s): SPP 160.
Open to SPP students only.
SPP 210 Critical Thinking in Sport
(3 credits) W (3,0,0,0,0)
This course examines the basic nature of reasoning and the fallacies which prevent good reasoning as it relates to the application to sport. Emphasis will be on understanding the logical structure of argument and on recognizing the influence of emotional persuasion in sport-related issues such as media presentation, socio-political decisions and one's own arguments. Both the theory and practice of critical thinking are covered through examining the ideas of philosophers such as Plato, Descartes, Hume, Russell, Wittgenstein, and Sartre and populist sport figures such as Vince Lombardi, Scotty Bowman and John Wooden.
