PSC 105 Introduction to Politics

This course examines some basic concepts in political science. Using examples from various countries, it introduces students to the nature of politics, government, the state, constitutions, international politics, political economy, human rights, and the process of democracy. It also examines different perspectives for understanding and evaluating the political world.

PSC 106 Canadian Politics

PSC 210 Political Thought

This course examines the political ideas and concepts at the root of modern political institutions and practices. Topics include: theories of legitimacy, justice, and democracy, as well as ideologies such as anarchism, communism, socialism, liberalism, conservatism, fascism, and feminism. (T)

PSC 212 Law and Politics

This course introduces students to the law and politics of the constitution, emphasizing human rights. It examines the history of human rights in Canada, and how that led to the creation of the Charter, and examines some pros and cons of that document. (T)

PSC 214 Extreme Politics

This course examines political extremism on the part of individuals and government, both Canadian and international. Topics include radicals of the 1960s and 1970s; feminist radicals; communists and anarchists; fascists, neofascists, and the radical right; ethnic terrorists; religious terrorists; aboriginal resistance; ecowarriors; state terrorism and genocide; and conspiracy theories. PSC 220 Comparative Politics

This course is an introduction to the comparative study of politics and the basic structures and processes of modern political systems, including an examination of selected foreign governments. There is a special focus on human rights issues. (T)

This course examines international politics through the study of the state system, international organizations, international violence, and international political economy. The course will include an examination of Canada's international role. (T)

PSC 224 International Conflict

This course examines the sources and nature of major contemporary international and national conflicts, including collective security vs. great power politics, regional conflicts, conflicts resulting from failed states, and the international response to terrorism. The role of international law and organizations in the realm of conflict resolution is also examined. (T)
