ELC 110 Developmental Perspectives 1

This course examines developmental theories that explain human growth from conception to early childhood. Current research in developmental research is explored. The image of the child in society and the influence of family and culture on children’s growth are addressed. Application of theoretical knowledge to early childhood practice is emphasized.

ELC 111 Supportive Relationships 1

This course introduces students to the knowledge, skills and dispositions of an early childhood educator. Emphasis is placed on developing responsive relationships with children. Students learn observation and recording techniques, with a focus on using positive language and a strength-based perspective. Through self reflection, students examine their interactions with children.

ELC 112 Supportive Relationships 2

This course continues to examine responsive relationships with children as well as developing caring relationships with adults in early childhood settings. Students continue to use observation and recording techniques with an emphasis on interpretation and planning for individual children and groups of children. Students learn how to guide in the context of trusting relationships.

ELC 120 Responsive Environments 1

Students examine the importance of the role of the environment to children’s growth and learning. Emphasis is placed on using pedagogical narration to understand and respond to children’s interests and needs. A variety of materials and learning experiences are explored that support early learning and respect for children and families.

ELC 121 Responsive Environments 2

Students continue to study the importance of creating environments that are inclusive and responsive to children, families and community. Pedagogical narration is used to support children’s intentions, growth and learning through play. Program planning for the individual child and for groups of children is examined.

ELC 130 Early Childhood Profession

This course examines the historical and social influences that have shaped the field of early childhood. Current legislation, social justice perspectives and personal attitudes regarding early programs are examined. Emphasis is placed on professional behavior in accordance with the ECEBC Code of Ethics.

ELC 140 Practicum 1

Students undertake directed observations of children, families, educators and early childhood environments. Students identify the roles and responsibilities of an early childhood educator and begin to assist in supporting children’s early development and learning. Emphasis is placed on developing caring relationships and providing appropriate materials and experiences for young children.

Pre or Corequisite(s): “C+” in ELC 111, ELC 120, and ELC 150.

ELC 141 Practicum 2

Students gain practical experience working with children, families and educators. Students apply the attitudes, knowledge and skills of a beginning early childhood educator. Students develop skills in establishing caring relationships, planning, implementing and evaluating appropriate learning experiences. Students demonstrate guidance strategies and initiate leading as a beginning early childhood educator.

Prerequisite(s): “COM” in ELC 140.
Pre or Corequisite(s): “C+” in CFCS 160, ELC 110, ELC 112, ELC 121, ELC 130, ENGL 150, and PSYC 154.

ELC 150 Health, Safety & Nutrition

This course examines the health, safety and nutritional needs of children. Emphasis is placed on the role and responsibilities of the educator in establishing and maintaining safe, nurturing environments for children in cooperation with families. Students learn how to write health, safety and nutrition curriculum and policies.

ELC 210 Developmental Perspectives 1

This course examines developmental perspectives that explain growth and development from early childhood to adolescence. Emphasis is placed on using pedagogical narratives to interpret and plan for children’s early growth and learning. Topics include using a holistic perspective and exploring the importance of family traditions and social environments to development.

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in ELC 110.

ELC 212 Supportive Relationships 3

This course continues to explore strategies with individual children and groups of children. Students continue to hone skills in observation, interpretation, planning, implementing and evaluating strategies that support children’s social interactions. Students examine the role of educator in supporting family centered practice, multiple perspectives and community networks.

Pre or Corequisite(s): “C+” in CFCS 160.

ELC 220 Inclusive Child Care

This course critically examines all aspects of creating an inclusive caring and learning environment for children with diverse abilities. Students explore working collaboratively with families and interdisciplinary teams. Advanced skills in observation and program planning using a strengths-based perspective are emphasized.

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in ELC 210, or CFCS 120, or PSYC 150.

ELC 230 Infant and Toddler Care

Utilizing knowledge of the growth of children under age 3, students apply the principles of responsive care to nurturing relationships, program planning and designing environments. Working collaboratively with families to support children’s cultural identities are examined.

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in ELC 210, or CFCS 120, or PSYC 150.

ELC 240 Practicum 3

(4 credits) F (20,0,0,160 over 14 weeks)

Students continue to apply learning to all aspects of early childhood programs. Focus is on supporting children’s well being and learning within teams using collaborative program planning methods. Demonstrating positive guidance strategies is emphasized.

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in ELC 141.
Pre or Corequisite(s): “C+” in ELC 210, ELC 212, and PSYC 256.

ELC 241 Practicum 4 ITE

(5 credits) W (Total 22,0,0,180 over 14 weeks)

This practicum consolidates theory and practice. Students are involved in all aspects of providing care and learning experiences that supports children under age 3 and their families. Students take the initiative to demonstrate practice as an early childhood educator. This practicum satisfies credentials for an infant toddler educator (ITE).

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in ELC 240.
Pre or Corequisite(s): “C+” in CFCS 211, CFCS 220, ELC 220, and ELC 230; and "C" in ENGL 160, or ENGL 164, or ENGL 165.

ELC 242 Practicum 4 SNE

(5 credits) W (Total 22,0,0,180 over 14 weeks)

This practicum consolidates theory and practice. Students are involved in all aspects of providing care and learning experiences that support children with diverse abilities and their families. Students take the initiative to demonstrate practice as an early childhood educator. This practicum satisfies credentials for a special needs educator (SNE).

Prerequisite(s): "C+" in ELC 240.
Pre or Corequisite(s): “C+” in CFCS 211, CFCS 220, ELC 220, and ELC 230; and "C" in ENGL 160, or ENGL 164, or ENGL 165.
