John Boraas

John Boraas is a passionate educator committed to community colleges, where adult learners can realize their academic and career potential.

In 2012, John was appointed Vice President Education, after serving as Dean, School of Access for 12 years. He began his post-secondary career as an instructor at Northern Lights College and held several leadership positions at that institution.

In recognition of his responsibility as the college’s chief educational officer, he was appointed as Provost and Vice President in 2023.

John holds a Master of Education from the University of Victoria. He has served as chair and member on numerous provincial committees and as a board member on several community organizations, including Literacy Victoria. John received the Peter Gzowski National Award for his contributions to adult literacy.

John is a values-based leader, leading by example consistently supporting college leaders, faculty, and staff in creating positive and supportive student experiences. He values relationships and nurtures an inclusive and respectful community. As the Provost, he stewards education, always keeping in mind the teachings of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers who have supported him throughout his career.

Some of John’s accomplishments include:

• Established the college’s first office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
• Leader and partner in developing the college’s Indigenization Initiative and its Truth and Reconciliation Response
• Provided leadership in the development of the new Trades and Technology and Health and Human Services Centres
• Supported the renovation and expansion of campus libraries, and the establishment of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
• Led initiatives to streamline and enhance education approvals and policy development processes  
• Oversaw the expansion and visibility of Camosun Innovates and the South Island Partnership (Dual-Credit)
• Initiated the college’s Applied Learning Framework
• Committed advocate for trades programs for Women and Indigenous People
