Camosun International is here to support you in your new cross-cultural journey. We'll provide you with the tools and resources to capitalize on this significant life experience and promote the development of intercultural competencies.
Camosun’s Pre-Departure Orientation has three parts:
D2L Global Experience Prep Course
When you are accepted into the study abroad program, you will be enrolled in an online course that must be completed before you depart. The online component takes 10-15 hours to complete and a recommended course schedule will be provided.
All outgoing students will come together for two face-to-face orientation sessions where you will meet your peers and review academic processes, policies, health, safety, money, and important documents. In addition, you will participate in a workshop on building intercultural competence. You will be invited to reflect on your own skills, knowledge, and attitude as it relates to navigating intercultural experiences. You will also discuss resources that can help you as you live life in a new environment. Please bring a pen and notebook.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Personality Inventory (Optional)
The MBTI is an excellent tool to help you to reflect on and anticipate some of the strengths and challenges you may experience while in a new environment and culture. The session will focus solely on your assessment results of the MBTI and is designed to identify a person's personality type, strengths, and preferences. No one personality type is "best" or "better" than any other one. The goal of using it is simply to help you learn more about yourself.
The cost of this assessment in organization off campus is over $200. Camosun students normally pay $45 for the assessment through Counselling. In this case, however, Camosun International will be covering the cost of this assessment. While this session is optional, you are strongly encouraged to attend. This assessment is facilitated by Anna Stein, International Student Counsellor.
Please note that the Pre-Departure Orientation (aside from the MBTI inventory) is mandatory for all outgoing study abroad students.
