Unique Opportunity – Experiential Learning
Trip of a lifetime: come join the 2011 Camosun College Asia Field School. Our destination this year will be India, specifically the state of Kerala. Why India? This enormous country is rising on the world stage, economically, politically and socially. Why Kerala? This southern state offers a unique approach to globalization and development that is being touted by scholars as a model for both other regions in India and abroad. While in Kerala, students will be given lectures by Indian scholars at several post-secondary institutions, including one of India’s preeminent research centres, and site visits such as a nature reserve, development projects, women’s centres, an Ayurveda clinic, ethnic minority villages, farming and fishing villages and other locations which reflect the unique path to development to be found in Kerala. As well, students will be introduced to the use of the ethnographic method and will participate in ethnographic research. This four week course of study will include one week of classes at Camosun College and three weeks in India. Students who complete the program will receive six university transferable credits as well as 1.5 Camosun College credits. This four week program will cost approximately $4500.00.
Courses:
This 4 week program offers students the opportunity to earn 5 course credits including a practicum component to be completed at the local hospital. The hospital/college will also serve as the site for residences and classroom instruction. The program will also include seminars on Mexican culture and history, a variety of socio-cultural activities and visits to local attractions. The on-site coordinator, supervisor and instructor will be a faculty member from the Camosun College Dental Hygiene Program.
This 6 week program will offer students the opportunity to earn 4 - 6 course credits taught by Camosun College faculty members, and will include seminars on culture and history, a variety of socio-cultural activities and visits to local attractions. The political situation in Nepal over the last few years has posed challenges including the socio-economic problems faced by many of its citizens, especially youth and families. As a junction for many of the world's major religions, Nepal is an interesting study in how peoples of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds co-exist.
Students may choose one of the field schools to meet their Year-One or Year-Two CPE requirement. The program will be for the duration of approximately 6weeks, offering students the opportunity to earn course credit in a non-traditional setting. Students may ear 5 credits for the program, which will include a practicum component to be completed at a local hospital. The hospital/college of nursing will also serve as the site for some residences and classroom instruction. The program will include a series of excursions and visits to local attractions. The on-site coordinator, supervisor and instructor will be a faculty member from the school of nursing.
