Camosun College in Tanzania

February 10, 2010

The Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and partner ministries in Mozambique, Senegal and Tanzania developed the Education for Employment (EFE) (Africa) program to support reforms to technical and vocational education and training in order to better respond to the needs of the labour market. This program is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Tanzania on a map of AfricaIn Tanzania the government ministries have selected key Tanzanian institutions to partner with Canadian Colleges to work together to meet these objectives. As the Canadian partner, Camosun College was selected based on an expression of interest submitted in the fall, which described our major undertakings in this sector and of proposed key personnel from our Trades Departments who would be involved in the project.

The Tanzanian partner, Technical College Arusha (TCA), is situated in Arusha municipality. It was established in May 1978 with the main objective of the College was to train technicians to the level of Full Technician Certificate. TCA is a non-autonomous institution under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MSTHE). It is fully registered and provisionally accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE). The College is made of five engineering departments; automotive, civil, electrical, mechanical and highways.

The primary purpose of this project is to work with the current engineering departments to develop and deliver curriculum modules that support the local mining industry needs and, thereafter, to develop diploma programs for instrumentation, mining and mineral exploration technology.

TCA has identified four main goals for this project which will span approximately 24 months over three fiscal years of activity in Tanzania and Canada:

The first visit to Tanzania, to further define the project and confirm specific activities, is currently underway. Jim Paulson, Olaf Nielsen and Ian Warrender are in Arusha right now meeting with our partners and local business and industry representatives. The time differences and some communications challenges notwithstanding, we are hoping to have a report from Tanzania along with some photographs posted to our website this week, in support of International Development Week.
